Sparkling was a promising magically powerful unicorn as a filly and Gleaming was no slacker either, but the time of their foalhood was not one to be one of happiness. Eve and Dim were terrified of the thought of their children being discovered to be powerful magical users by the Queen's extensive guard and information gatherers, so they hid their childrens incredible prowess in the field, either telling them to purposefully fail tests to spiking their foods and drinks with magic draining potions.
Gleaming easily went into the guard. While his parents managed to spare him of being dragged off as a foal, he managed to enter the guard with his impressive skill no matter it be magical or physical. This is where he gained his cutie mark, a sword with small stars around it. At this time, he understood the reason his parents held him back and decided it was for the best.
As did Sparkling. Sparkling, however, seemed very interested in the queen. "Interested" as in practically enthralled with the goddess. This fueled the teen into studying magic. With her impressive knowledge, she entered many magical colleges and studied extensively, writing her own hypotheses and theories. She gained her cutie mark for studying and writing her own magical books and spells.
Sparkling was eventually chosen for an excavation crew, which was to be in the snowy mountains uncomfortably close to the Crystal Empire. The Empire had only recently rose once more, and Queen Magmare Sun was now deciding what to do about it.
The excavation did not go accord into plan. Sparkling and her team were attacked, and taken back to the Empire. Most of the rest of the team were either executed or enslaved, while Sparkling had been singled out.
The Queen of the Crystal Empire could sense the mare's immense magical power, and they decided to keep Sparkling as a "magical well" to drain from.
Now a personal slave to the royals of the Crystal Empire, Sparkling Spellbook has almost lost her sanity. Maybe, one day, she will escape. But for now, war rages in Equestria, and Sparkling is nothing.
