it is quite unnerving, I'm sure its Moreso if you actually are hearing the person speak to you like that directly.
My guess is past trauma combined with paranoia that could trigger such an event
Terrifying, isn't it? It's not like the movies.
Years ago I had a roommate who—well, I don't know what the precipitating event was, but I noticed one afternoon he was talking to himself, getting angrier and angrier. I asked him what was going on. He started ranting about how some friend of his had a little brother who drove a purple car, and he drove a purple car, so obviously he was trying to imitate my roommate for some sinister purpose. He was enraged and barely in control of himself.
Now, I'm not the most socially savvy guy around. I'm socially inept. And there was the pedantic lobe of my brain that wanted to apply the elenchis. Part of me really, really wanted to ask him questions (like, "Is it everybody who drives a purple car that's out to get you, or just him?" and "They sell a lot of purple cars. Are the auto makers in on it?") in order to lead him to see that he was being irrational. But I thought that was unlikely to end well. I thought he might decide it meant I was one of the conspirators.
Poor bastard. He lost his job shortly after that and ended up homeless. For all I know he still is.
But that is what a psychotic break looks like from the outside. He was absolutely sure he'd had a brilliant, earth-shattering insight and he had to share it with the world. It was just word salad. Weird, creepy, threatening word salad.
