"Once upon a time, there were two sisters of immense power.

One ruled at dusk, and the other ruled at dawn.

The smaller sister, the ruler of the night, found herself overshadowed by the eldest’s rule.

During the summers, when her sun shined the brightest and the warm days would rest upon the world, the eldest would keep her daylight shining longer than usual, until it came time for winter.

During each winter, the youngest sister was overcome with grief and jealousy. She saw the unfairness as the days grew longer in the summer. She wanted to take action.

And so, after the summer was over, the little sister asked the eldest to lower the sun earlier than usual to make way for the moon during the winters.

The older sister felt that her power was threatened, and refused her sibling’s plead. The two fought amongst eachother.

The ruler of the night felt trapped and unappreciated. She felt weak. For years on, she continued to be overshadowed.

During the long, hot days, she would take refuge in the Everfree forest where it was quiet and dark. She found comfort amongst the creatures lurking in the dark. She felt at peace. She remained here, and built a small home in it’s shroud of shadow, forgotten by the world, and her sister.

One thousand years later, the ruler of the dark emerged from her hiding place. For one thousand years she gained her powers and harnessed the darkness in her. And that day, she asked her sister to step aside once more.

Her sister once again refused, and once again, they fought amongst eachother.

Harnessing the power of the shadow, the youngest’s power emerged from her, embracing her and granting the strength she needed.

On October 31st, the battle of the two sisters would be marked in history as the day the war began. It would be known as the youngest’s return, and would be known as her revenge.

Nightmare Moon was her name, and on that date, it was declared “Nightmare Night”.

The eldest today is known as Queen Celestia, and the younger was declared Queen Nightmare Moon by her followers.

The land of Equestria was devided into two.

The Solar Union would worship the light during the dusk.

The Lunar Republic would bask in Queen Night’s darkness during the dawn.

In the summer, when it was warmest, Celestia would make the days longer.

In the winter, when it was the coldest, Nightmare would make the nights longer.

To this day we still live in a land devided by the two rulers.
