Below is her backstory which is quite long so I suggest you read it when you have the time to. It is the very first backstory I've written and I am aware of the choppiness and cliches. Hope you enjoy anyway!
Candy Cane Backstory
Sweet Lemon rushed to her bedroom window and opened it. It had been pouring with snow all night long with reports of many ponies stuck in their cottages. But only occasional snowflake was seen from through the glass in the winter sun. It was only two days from Hearths Warming Eve and she hadn't done much work. The tree still needed to be cut and the weather ponies haven't cleaned the sidewalks for the Hearths Warming Walk she had scheduled for Hearths Warming Eve. Sweet walked sluggishly into the kitchen and made herself a bowl of oats. The cupboard holding the grain was empty. Sweet Lemon sighed. She had forgot to stock up for the week ahead for the Hearths Warming Eve celebrations she planned to attend. She sat back in her chair and reached for a banana on the fruit rack. As she reached, she noticed that Beurre had brought in the Daily News. The top article read "Ponies attending Hearths Warming Walk postponed until tomorrow morning." Curious, Sweet brought it over to her. Reading on, a rush of guilt overpowered her. She hadn't remembered to contribute her plan for the walk so the walk was cancelled. Forgetting about breakfast, Sweet rushed to her door, put on her parka, and rushed out. Due to the crazy storm the night before, her mudroom soon overflowed with a foot of snow. Sighing with concern and annoyance she summoned a snow shovel and spent the next minute shoveling the snow. Luckily a pegasus had flown by and offered assistance. Thanking him, Sweet Lemon rushed out of her residence and hurried to the local community center. Storming through the door, she went to the registration stand and out of breath asked to see the community leader LickitySplit. Rushing down the hall, Sweet ran to the office and slammed open the door. LickitySplit stood in the center of the room with a disappointing look on her face. Sweet Lemon explained her situation including that she was over stressed last night with all the celebrations and that she was never informed about the postponing and that all she didn't even have breakfast. Without hesitation, Lickity explained that unfortunately Sweet could not continue with any other projects this year because of her constant forgetful self and that they had asked another leader to run the walk on Hearths Warming. Apologizing, Sweet walked out of the center, feeling guilty with disappointment. Though she didn't want to be glum during the best time of the year, she decided to enjoy the space of time she now has and went to the local library. She went down to the foal room to look at Hearths Warming picture books to get ideas on what to do for the next few days. She picked out a book called "Raising our Flag" and flipped through it. As she read, the story mentioned how Hearths Warming was supposed to be a time of joy and relaxation. Laughing, she thought of the situation she just went through. As she placed the book back, she noticed a book out of place. When reaching to place it back, Sweet noticed that it was a level 10 spell book belonging in the Expert Unicorns section. Curious, she looked through it. Sweet had finished in level 8 in Spells at the Canterlot School for gifted unicorns and she was always the one known for wanting to learn more. Being the klutzy pony she is, Sweet went to the table of contents and read over the chapters. "Creating Food","Preparation for Princess Levels","Advanced Facial Decor","Come to life- that one had caught her eye. She flipped to the chapter "Come to Life" and what looked like one simple equation for the spell sat on the page. Coming to her senses, Sweet Lemon closed the book and walked out of the foal room to return the book to the shelf it belonged. She was smart enough to know that unicorns shouldn't be messing with spells they aren't familiar with. Heading out of the library she still felt empty with boredom with it only being early noon. Belly rumbling, she returned home to get her saddle bag, tripping through the snow and walked to the "Cutie Market" to stock up on food. Picking up bread, fruit, vegetables, and ingredients for cookies she planned to make she went to the cashier who she recognized. One of her PFFs Apple Bumpkin was helping to run it. She and Sweet said hello and and chatted for a while happy to finally see each other over the holidays. But Apple's heart sank when she heard the news that Sweet was kicked out of the community leaders until next year. She was holding up the line so she concluded that everything is fine and they'll meet at the walk on Hearths Warming Day. Rushing home with hunger, thanking the weather pony who had offered to clean the snow from her cottage, she rushed in and closed the door. Starving, she ate the banana she saved, glancing at the news paper with her humiliating story on the front. Making a quick lunch, she shoveled it all in feeling satisfied once finished. Feeling bored once again, Sweet Lemon decided to make the cookies from the ingredients she bought. Following a sugar-mint cookie recipe she found in a cooking book, she mixed the dry with the wet and after 10 minutes of redoes, finally put the dough in the pan. Using a spell she learned in level 4 called "Secret Spice" she cast on the dough, she put them on the oven and began to bake them. Not a minute had passed when Sweet heard a loud thump that came from the oven. Shocked she turned around and all she saw was white light. Panicked she turned the oven off and opened the door careful to watch if something came out at her. As the light died down, she peered inside, panicking with fear, she saw not perfect cupcakes but a small red and white striped pegasus who looked like it had just been born. Horrified at what she did, she pulled out the tray holding the small mare and held her up. A small peep came out off her. Sweet Lemon immediately realized what she had done. She had looked at that level 9 Come to Life spell from the library a little too long. Concerned that she would receive a horrible punishment that might take the adorable lump of fur away from her, Sweet took the mare to her room and gave her water and some oats in her bed. The mare had mumbled a few words and what even sounded like the word "mom." Bewildered by the word, Sweet knew she couldn't keep the pegasus hostage in her cottage. She tucked the pony in her saddle bag and due to her abnormal small size was able to cover her. Anxious to see Princess Twilight, Sweet took the train to Ponyville careful not to have the mare blow her cover. As she arrived, she ran through the town to Twilight's Castle and stormed through the door. Sweet Lemon shouted for Princess Twilight only to be left without an answer immediately realizing that the princess was away in Canterlot for the Hearths Warming Ceremony. Sighing, she ran out of her castle across town, receiving some suspicious looks from locals, back to the train station to catch one of the last rides to Canterlot. Once dropped off she came across a large crowd of ponies that only got larger as she walked on. Mumbling on how dumb it is that the pegasi are not allowed to hover, she made her way to the back of the castle. The ceremony had just ended and the princesses were heading to the back. Desperate to see Twilight, she ran past the guards using teleportation spells and ended up running into Princess Celestia. Hot with embarrassment, Sweet asked if she could talk to Princess Twilight as it was an emergency. Celestia replied that if anything is as important to discuss with my faithful student, it should also be shared with me. Given no choice, Sweet Lemon opened her saddle bag to reveal the small mare she had tried to keep secret. Gasping in awe, Princess Celestia, Luna, and, Cadance instantly dropped their heads. Princess Twilight however did not understand the situation and Sweet had asked for reasoning. Princess Luna had replied that Sweet had summoned a Hearths Warming Sprit capable of surviving the first risk it lives through. Confused, Twilight asked for more. Cadence reviled that Hearths Warming Spirits are small ponies that can be summoned using a Come to Life spell only by the most advanced unicorns. Blushing, Sweet Lemon stepped back. With I suspicious look, Twilight asked what the fuss was about. Knowing that she had no choice in the matter, Sweet Lemon explained the whole situation including that her curious self was dumb enough to open a level 10 spell book. On the matter, she also asked why the book was in the foal room in the first place. Luna said that either some unicorn had put it out of place on accident or the town librarians weren't too careful. Apologizing and willing to accept any punishment given. Sweet Lemon handed the mare over the the princesses and started to leave the castle. As she reached the door, Princess Celestia stopped her. She told her that Sweet Lemon had a very special gift. The spell on that page was one only she was able to see. It appeared simple but it was actually a complex simple code that most unicorns could never accomplish with just one look. Amazed with her, Celestia handed the mare back over as a Hearths Warming Gift to have forever. Squealing, Sweet ran back to the pegasus and hugged her very tight. But she had one more question. If the book was so special, why was it in her ordinary town library? Princess Luna replied that we saw that one pony from your town might have this special gift. And that she could see how much more beautiful Hearths Warming can be after a long while of stress. Sweet sighed. The princesses knew everything didn't they? Thanking the Princesses for the millionth time, Sweet headed out of the castle with the bundle in her saddle bags. But Twilight halted her once more and said that she must give her a name. Sweet Lemon peered into her bag and realized that the mares tail was not the typical bunch of fur as it was a long real tail with what looked like a peppermint on the tail. Sweet Lemon had thought that she looked a bit like a candycane and right as she said that, the mare shouted yes! Yes! Yes! Mom! It was in that moment that Sweet knew that she was going to have the best Hearths Warming ever with her new "sister" Candy Cane. Biding goodbye to Celestia, Sweet ran out of the castle and was just able to catch the train home. As she arrived she brought the mare over to her couch and began to snuggle her. The mare mumbled a few words again, knowing that it might be a while until she could fully speak to her new sister. Sweet decided that Candy Cane was a bit long of a name so she and close friends could nickname her CC. To close her day, Sweet finished the batch of cookies she made, careful to tell her spells apart and made sugar mint cookies for her and CC to share. It had never been a better Hearths Warming Eve Eve she decided. Soon, this mare will become a real part of my family. As it was getting late, Sweet tucked her into her bed and got in as well. Happy Hearths Warming Eve Eve she said to Candy Cane. CC mumbled back a Happy Hearths Warming. And Sweet kissed her goodnight and closed her window.
