Red Cedar sat on the front steps of her family’s home, keeping an eye on the kids. Blue Velvet was late! What was taking her so long?
“Blue, hurry up! The kids are waiting!”
She turned and called into the house.
“I’m ready! I’m ready!”
Blue called out frantically, rushing down the stairs.
“I had to get dressed! What do you think?”
Cedar eyed her sister in disgust. Her dress—if it even qualified as that—was way too short; if it were any shorter Blue would be flashing her private parts to the whole town. Her neckline was horribly low, showing off cleavage that nobody needed to see. And Blue Velvet looked like she had no intention of changing.
“What do you think you’re doing dressed like that?”
Blue’s excitement quickly faded to annoyance at her sister’s nagging. This was not the first time they’d had this argument.
“I like this dress and I thought it’d be fun! Why does it matter?”
Cedar gestured sharply towards Violet and her friends.
“There are CHILDREN here! They don’t need to be seeing your-“
She cleared her throat.
“Wear whatever you want when you’re by yourself but I cannot let you go out and give every foal in town the wrong idea. It’s just not appropriate.”
Violet’s friend, Tea Cake, stomped her foot impatiently.
“Quit fighting and let’s go! We’re fucking late!”
Cedar gasped at the profanity.
“See Blue! You’re already corrupting them!”
“For the last time Cedar, I have nothing to do with-“
Blue shook her head and sighed.
“It’s too late for me to change even if I wanted to, so we might as well go and have a good time.”
Cedar relented.
“Alright. At least wear a sweater.”
As she always did, Blue ignored Cedar and didn’t cover up.
