Backstory:
Starlight Glimmer was born to 2 Canterlotian unicorns- Quartz Galaxy and Fire Light. Since a young age Starlight felt strongly attached to her mother. Quartz worked in a special part of the Equestrian military that specialized in magic. She'd often go on magical missions and tell her daughter about it when she came back home. This inspired Starlight to start practicing magic in hopes that one day she would do the same as her mom.
Things weren't that good at school. Starlight was introverted and a bit of a nerd. She was the top student in her class, which caused a lot of jealousy along her classmates and they started bullying her. It got worse when most of the ponies in her class got their cutie marks and she was called a blank flank profusely. She hid the fact that she was getting bullied from her parents really well, because she didn't want to seem weak.
Her parents divorced when she was 11, which didn't traumatize her that much since she knew she would still see her father.
Starlight and her mother moved to Siren's Hall soon after since there was a lot of magical activity around that area and it would be easier to do her job from there. A few days after moving into their new house an Ursa Minor was reported in a forest near Siren's Hall. Quartz Galaxy was send out on the mission and she brought her daughter along with her. Starlight had always wanted to go on a mission with her mother and Quartz knew that. She was 11 already and thought she was ready and considering Ursa Minors weren't that big of a danger she assumed everything would be okay. Long story short the Ursa Minor ended up killing Quartz Galaxy and Starlight ran away to get help. On her way back she forgot what she was running for and went back home to cry.
Several days after that Fire Light had gone on a surprise visit to Siren's Hall, but when he got to their house he was surprised to see only a depressed Starlight. She told him what had happened and Fire contacted the police department, who took out Quartz's corpse out of the forest.
Custody was handed over to Fire Light after that and he tried to be the best father he could be, because he knew his daughter had been through a lot and wanted her to recover. He did this by spoiling her unconditionally and embarrassing her publicly. Starlight quickly grew to hate her father.

The foals in Siren's Hall appeared to be nicer, but due to her previous experiences with her peers Starlight had developed severe trust issues and refused to make friends with any of them. She isolated herself in her studies once again and her only ''friend'' was the librarian at the town's library. That would change very soon.
One day at the library Starlight med a colt named Sunburst. She hadn't seen him in school before and turned out he was home schooled as well as a huge nerd. The two of them bonded over their knowledge on magic and not long after Starlight had developed a crush on him. They were practically best friends.
Things changed once again, however, when Sunburst got his cutie mark after performing a rather complicated spell. After seeing his cutie mark, his parents send his to magic school and him and Starlight seemed would never cross paths ever again. This broke Starlight's heart, which send her spiraling down further into depression.
Around the age of 12 Starlight started dressing a gothic fashion and act up more often. This caused her class to hate her and the bullying began again. She was expelled at 13 when she got into a fight with one of her bullies.
Fire Light was disappointed, to say the least, but he felt too scared to punish his daughter. He thought most of her issues were linked to her mother passing away and wanted to give her as much time as possible for her to move on.
Starlight and Fire got into a huge argument when she was 15 and Starlight ended up running away from home. While wandering homeless through Equestria Starlight got her cutie mark by performing a dark magic spell a year later.
Since then Starlight traveled Equestria, changing her name several times and even going to jail once.
At 20 Starlight found a small village, which was rather 2 rolls of houses called Starville, Starlight settled there with the specific plan to take over and remove everypony's cutie marks. Starlight has never really liked her cutie mark due to the fact she got it through black magic. Combine that with the fact she was bullied for being a blank flank for most of her life and got her cutie mark at 16, Starlight had a lot of anti-cutie mark views. Her experiences while homeless also fueled that.
Upon arriving at the village Starlight introduced herself as a poor, young, homeless mare, who just needed accommodation. She worked her reputation up in the village, charming every citizen and eventually one day leading them in a cave and taking away all their cutie marks. The ponies rioted at first, but Starlight quickly quieted them down and she was suddenly the leader of that village.
Starlight wouldn't be held accountable for her actions for another 5 years when Princess Twilight Sparkle and her friends came to the village. She took their cutie marks and tried to brainwash them as well, but it didn't work, Starville's citizens getting their cutie marks back along with the mane 6. Starlight is forced to flee and after stalking the mane 6 for a year she has a final showdown with Twilight through time and space, but the princess ends up convincing her that she doesn't have to be a villain and from that moment onward Starlight is taken under Princess Twilight's wing as her friendship pupil.
Starlight eventually makes up Sunburst and makes may new friends along the way. Some time later Queen Chrysalis kidnaps the mane 6 along with some other major figures so it's up to Starlight and her friends to save the day. They do and a week or so later a party is held to celebrate Starlight's accomplishments. At the end of that party Twilight reveals that she plans on sending Starlight away, but she would have to choose where to go. Out of all the options she is given she chooses to move to the Crystal Empire with her longtime crush, Sunburst.Upon moving there she also gets a job as a royal wizard with Sunburst's help.
One night at a party Starlight and Sunburst end up getting a little too drunk and doing a certain deed, which shall not be described. A month or so after that Starlight found out she was pregnant, which caused a lot of havoc in their friendship. This lead to Sunburst confessing his feelings after Starlight had threatened to leave him and promised to take care of the foal and her. They made up at the end and had their son Bellator.
Since they didn't want Bell to grow up with non-married parents they started planning on a wedding, so Starlight had to go back to Siren's Hall and make up with her father as well, which worked and her and Sunburst tied the knot at the end of the day. 4 years later Sunburst and her had their other son, Starbeam.

Starlight is her old usual self from the show. A bit sarcastic, street smart, independent and down to earth. Not much is seen from her in Our Little Star: Rebirth, because she is mostly seen as Starbeam's mother or one of Flurry Heart's mentors. When in her mother role she is extremely supportive of her son and may come off as embarrassing. She is mostly married to her job, so she doesn't have much time to spend with her son, so she tries to make up for it. That and the fact that she lost her mother early on makes want to give her kinds what she didn't have.
