Well I heard that they're good people who've been raised to believe that they're higher beings chosen by God to alone ascend to Heaven, and all outsiders are nothing but philosophical zombies, mere trials for them to overcome. They're also taught that the chosen never have evil thoughts or feelings, so they're all paranoid that the others will find out the truth that they are a pretender among the flock. And the clincher is we allow them to isolate their children from learning any other truth, until long after they're so invested in the cult (and pregnant if female), they're afraid to leave.

But yeah mostly good people. The bad people who like being dicks have an easier time escaping actually.
