The gladiatorial arena fell apart along with the institution of slavery, in the fall of Rome. The Middle Ages were one of petty tyrants and entrenched warlords extracting a terrible toll from the divided populace, centuries of stability, ignorance and stagnation, but they did still have wood chopping to work out their frustrations!
Oh and war.
Good point. Well, they had Gladiator fights and hunting for that so it pretty much evens things out.
