To the extent that I ever thought about it that far, I always assumed a few things. That the marshmallow hooves shown onscreen are stylistic oversimplifications, that they wear horseshoes, and that the horseshoes are magical magnets that the wearer can control by thinking about it, and use to grip and manipulate things.

One of most important things a grip provides for tools, and ESPECIALLY weapons, is ability to let go at a moment's notice if the tool is stuck, pulled, or has impacted something too hard. These horseshoes are a recipe for hoof degloving (don't recommend looking it up), or at the very least losing the tool/weapon and having it fly off in a random direction if the pins are an intentional weakpoint.
Once again, hoof tentacles prevail!
