Dust Devil, one of Zecora's foalhood friends from Farasi, is celebrating nonbinary pride. For those who didn't read the season 10 comic arc (or doesn't read the comics at all), Dust Devil is an Abada, a Unicorn from Farasi, the zebra kingdom; Abada is an African unicorn. Farasi is the home of not only Zebras, but also Abadas and Kelpies. Zecora befriended another Zebra, two Kelpies, and two Abadas. Dust Devil, along with the rest of Zecora's old friends, would help her defeat the dangerous Grootslang, by using incredible breakneck speed and show insurmountable kindness, which becomes the Abada's Element of Harmony.
There's a reason why Dust Devil is celebrating, and that is because this Abada is nonbinary! Instead of calling this character "he" or "she," Dust is a "they," and use plural prounouns. They are our first and possibly only nonbinary character in My Little Pony!
Non-binary or genderqueer means any gender identity that is not strictly male or female all the time, and so doesn't fit within the gender binary. Non-binary identities usually fall within transgender, individual nonbinary people may or may not consider themselves transgender. Non-binary people may identify as having two or more genders (being bigender or trigender); having no gender (agender, nongendered, genderless, genderfree); moving between genders or having a fluctuating gender identity (genderfluid); being third gender or other-gendered (a category that includes those who do not place a name to their gender). Since gender identity is separate from sexual or romantic orientation, non-binary people have a variety of sexual orientations. For some people, "nonbinary" is as specific as they want to get about labeling their gender. For others, they call themselves a more specific gender identity under the nonbinary umbrella. Many people who call themselves nonbinary also consider themselves genderqueer. However, the terms have different meanings and connotations: genderqueer means any gender identity or expression which is, itself, queer.
