> Brook is a strange young unicorn who lived her life on the beach of Horse Shoe Bay. She was born to a promising sailor and a nice young mare whose past is unknown. They lived in a nice house for the first year of her life, until her father sailed away on a ship that has yet to return to this day. Losing their means of money, Brook and her mother were forced to build a hut on the surf, where her mother struggled to raise her alone. While her mother was swamped with her misfortunes, Brook had her own to deal with. She managed to finish school, and now must attend the local college in an attempt to make the best of her education. It wouldn't have been so terrible if no one knew that she was still a blank-flank at her age. Every morning, she made sure her flank was out of view when she put on her uniform, to at least hide it from others and herself. Upon starting college, fillies from her former school made sure to embarrass her and bully her whenever possible, causing the whole school to continuously mock her for being the only blank-flank mare in town. Facing serious depression and no money, Brook tried to seek comfort from her mother, who continued to ignore her daughter's problems. Trying to at least help her mother, she sought out some sort of part-time job to try and earn bits for her family, only to be ridiculed more and turned away from every place she tried.
> One day, Brook returned home to an empty hut, to where she remained quietly for three days before she realized that her mother wouldn't be returning to her.
> She eventually dropped out of college, and had a traumatic experience, that strangely gave her the realization that she needed for her life, and on that day, she was no longer a blank-flank.
> The happiness of her cutie mark was short-lived. Jobless, and living right in the surf, she brooded over the memories she had of her parents, treasuring a photograph of the three of them, and the last letter they ever received from their father. Living in the surf once again brought about the name-calling and the mocking as ponies saw the young mare scavenging up and down the beach. She became known as a beach-comber, something she found extremely insulting.
> Recently, she became fed up with her life that seemed to have no direction. She plans to travel to Canterlot, for there be the finest library in Equestria, a place she was sure would hold records of newspapers, a place she hoped to discover the fate of her father, if nothing else.
