He seems to have gone through a lot, poor guy. As to what exactly, it's a long story. After being in the land of Equestria for months on months, he's learned to adapt to the doings and dealings of ponies. He's transformed into a pony at times just to help blend in with certain situations. Sometimes being low-key is a much better way of staying alive, much easier than being more than double the height of every other being walking around the town.

But to his advantage, he has technology that ponies have yet to discover.
