If you're worried about the lantern being found and being resold to somepony else, I could just offer a 10,000 bit reward in exchange for the safe return of the lantern.
I'll also try to disincentivize any unnecessarily prolonged withholding of the lantern for personal use with a 20,000 bit penalty, plus a stint in the county jail for possession of fenced/stolen property.
