Ok
Whether I'd care to read a story starring this OC as a main character, I couldn't say. The characterization of the one depicted in this image honestly feels a bit weak and generic compared to some "look at this character standing in a cool pose" pictures I've seen, but that still ends up looking like a deliberate conceptual choice, given that this is an OC, which is basically fanfiction separated from the source material so much that the link is very tenuous. Other things that feed into this are how the low background detail and contrast in the foreground can be seen as a parallel conceptual structure to this, with the background being the source material that the author doesn't actually seem to care about. There's honestly a lot of ideas going on here, and it's hard for me to organize them.
Suffice it to say, I like this, and it feels weird to like it for some reason. I love it on a technical and conceptual level, but find the deliberately(?) mediocre level of character expressed in the piece underwhelming, no matter how well it works out on the other levels. I derive one kind of enjoyment from seeing stuff that's great on a technical and conceptual level, but I was looking for the character kind of enjoyment and fun when I stumbled on this.
If someone asks me to make a definition and describe the platonic ideal of what fanart is, this is one of a small handful of examples I'd use to explain the different kinds of appeal fanart can have.
