I'm actually happy if this ends up being cannon, the Windigos were honestly useless creatures, they are pure evil, and were a rather bad crutch for pony unity. I'm all for ponies and their allies hunting them down to extinction.

In the mid 500's Princess Twilight ordered the world wide hunt of the Windigos, which she saw as a worthless species that had no real purpose and was more trouble then worth, so hunter teams were formed to slaughter these horrid beasts, AND THE GREATEST OF THESE WONDERFUL HUNTERS WAS CAPTAIN CROW!
