There's at least a page's worth of early designs and notes that I tried and the nixed, and I don't think I'm quite done even now. I must've changed my mind a dozen times just while coloring that full body shot at the bottom. He was supposed to have yellow-orange mane to match the underside of the dragon heads, for one. Even once I was semi-satisfied with the colors, I still felt there was something wrong, and fiddled with it until I decided it was the hairstyle that was bugging me, and removed that forelock he still has in the pencil sketches.
