Yeah, you heard that right. Starry isn't the protagonist. It goes to this dude! I can't say so much, because of two things: I don't want to spoil his character, and his character is already revealed. Shinelight Sparkle
Shinelight Sparkle is the son of Twilight Sparkle and Flash Sentry and the younger brother of Starry Sparkle. Unlike his sister, he's a stubborn and rude prince. He doesn't even get along with most ponies he meets.
Nicknames: Twilight Junior (or Twilight Jr.), Mr. Sparkle/Sentry
Gender: Male
Age: 6 (Earlier), 16 (Currently)

History
Shinelight was born in a royal family. Specifically, being Twilight Sparkle's son. He's also the younger brother of the future ruler of Equestria, Starry Sparkle.
The two didn't get along well since their youth. When Starry made friends with the children of Twilight's old friends, Shinelight hated them because of their attitude towards him. The only one he likes is Royal Moon. Thankfully, he made friends with Appletart, the son of Applejack. Before he could even make friends, though, his father disappeared after a visit to Canterlot. To this day, he doesn't know anything about his father and what happened to him. Only his mother would know.
Many years passed, and he became an author. As he became an author, his sister became a well-renowned scientist until when she was announced to be the future ruler of Equestria instead of him. That causes a more of a rip between their relationship. As time goes on, he made more friends along the way.
