Since 2021 I've been reading many criticisms from the fandom (usually based on leaks, assumptions or information you see on a new toy, as if judging an entire show based on some leaks is ok instead of judging the G5 on its own merit) and I think most of them are unjustified. I expected the Generation 5 to have a hard first step not because of what it needed to earn, but because of the fandom not wanting G5 to change things, even though Friendship is Magic already changed so many things and concepts in massive ways, especially the last 4 seasons.
Despite that A New Generation received positive reviews and the first episode of Make your Mark was very decent, some people are acting like "this is where they crossed the line", which is ridiculous. It received some criticisms that I think are unfair, especially those that are meant to compare G5 with G4 just to make G4 look good in comparison despite that G5 had very little time compared to the 9 years of content G4 received.
However, I'm going to defend it, because at least the premise is interesting and different, it has very good intentions, the characters are likeable (keep in mind none of the Mane 5 are manipulative, which is always a good thing, I want Generation 5 to focus more on friendship), it gave us reasons to root for these ponies and there are tons of possibilities for Make your Mark to be great. I think people are being mean for the sake of being mean. Sadly there are a lot of factors that influence this. Friends, forums, threads, social culture, social approbation, what you are expected to say, what you are expected not to say, etc.
People like to think “yeah, we are individuals”, but they don’t mind to say the same thing a thousand guys already said instead of saying what you really mean and being sincere. It’s not that people are stubborn, it’s that some people can be imprisoned to the thought of “if I’m being too sincere, I’ll get a subtle social rejection for everyone to the point where they don’t respect me, so I’ll say what they want to hear”. It’s that kind of fear, the fear of having your own voice in a group because if you had your voice, someone will get offended, no matter how polite you’re being.
I'm not saying you have to 100% love Generation 5 (there are things I don't like, like the pop songs despite I like the background music). I'm saying that you have to give it a chance the same way you gave Friendship is Magic a chance. If you are a fan of My Little Pony, you should find things in Generation 5 to enjoy rather than find things to hate on. After all, these shows are all about love and tolerance.
