Coloratura sighed. She gazed down at the photo on the dresser, the smiling eyes of two happy foals looking back up at her.

It seemed so simple back then. Before all the concerts and the record deals and all the responsibilities.

When she and AJ first resorted to pen pals, Coloratura thought she might be okay. Maybe she could stamp her feelings down. There was no way she had a chance. AJ had a loyalty to her family and Coloratura… what did she want?

Coloratura looked at herself in the mirror. Her smudged makeup was streaking due to the sweat from performing, her wig barely staying on with the clips. It had been a couple years since she had rid herself of Svengallop and his toxic presence, but nothing felt different. She worked doubly as hard, performing twice as much, now without an agent. She was just trying to make sure she had enough money to stay afloat. It was all becoming too much.

Coloratura wondered if Applejack dealt with similar issues on her farm. When AJ was young, when Coloratura had first met her, she was such a sad little foal. She had just lost her parents, mourning them and trying to find her place in the world. But when they had reunited, AJ looked happy, full of joy, life, and surrounded by… friends… family.

Coloratura wondered if she had any friends or family like that.

The only one she had before was Svengallop… other than that…

Coloratura shook her head of the thoughts, but they refused to leave her mind. How had she gotten herself here? She had left her watery world to find something other than solitude in the water. She left the water because of AJ… but somehow she had ended up right back where she started… alone…

A small tear slipped down Coloratura’s cheek, wondering how she lost what it meant to be happy.
