Second, yes I watched 3D pony show and I have thoughts
This will contain spoilers (obviously), so read at your own risk! Also, if you want to read about my thoughts on the movie, that’ll be over here: Obligatory I watched the new MLP movie post
Like before, I’ll be splitting this up into sections, so let’s dive in!
Positives: The music! Still no G4, but for what it is trying to go for I can say that it's not half bad. Also horse puns because sure, why not.
Hitch! I’ll dive more into Sparky in another post but we stan pony dragon dad in this household. I do love how much he cares for his community and wants to make sure that everyone is safe, even if it means having to go through extremes to do so. 10/10 best Sheriff
Izzy! Apparently she was a bit nerfed in the Youtube series so good to see her coming back to her roots. Gotta love crazy craft girl
TWILIGHT! I know, she’s got a hek of a lot of explaining to do (if she is even alive, that is) which I’ll touch on in the negatives, but I’m just happy to see my girl again-even if she is not flattering in 3D, yikes hun. It might just be that specific art style though, if MLP SFMs are anything to go by.
Some of my questions got answered, and there are more now, so Hasbro did something right. Also, Sprout works in community service now? …Ok, I guess. Not what I was expecting but whateves
Negatives: Again, I must reiterate: TWILIGHT WHAT WENT WRONG??? It’s one thing to make something for the greater good, but based on the show’s depiction(Sunny’s version at least) the Unity Crystals were formed and magic was locked away because…one single pony got hurt?
When we’ve seen ponies and other creatures literally tussling with each other in G4?
Oof, that’s weak writing, and I usually give kids’ shows the benefit of the doubt. Granted, I imagine things would be a bit higher risk if the ponies were of a higher stature, but still, I dun like it. What also still bothers me is the whole no more raising and setting the moon and controlling the weather thing. Did Twi(and I guess by extension the other princesses) just go like “yeah, I think the future generation is gonna go to shit and everyone’s gonna be as dumb as a brick so just in case let’s take away everything that made our generation interesting and keep it for ourselves.” Most likely not, but at least that would be a better explanation than just, ope the world runs normally now without the need for horse rulers or something! Ugh, I go on for hours about all this, moving on!
Misty, god poor Misty. I love her, but this poor girl needs to find a way out of her situation or something! Pardon my French but Opaline is a Grade A bitch, and not just because she’s the villain. Like, I get it. Most villains treat their henchmen like garbage, but homegirl is taking the cake with the verbal abuse, manipulation through the just out of reach, most likely fake “promise” of giving Misty her Cutie Mark being the tooth-rotting sweet icing to cover it. Maybe it's because I’ve gone through similar situations, but I’m ready to fight for this CGI horse damnit
Sunny’s characterization. It’s a toss up for this one because in hindsight she’s…Sunny, but also wayyy dumbed down compared to her film self. At least there you can empathize with her trying to follow in her father’s footsteps and have everyone come together again. Here….Idk, maybe I just don’t have as strong of a liking for characters being named Sunny and their whole personality is “hi yes I’m happy like 24/7 and maybe sad like once in a blue moon yay!”(This applies to Rainbow High Sunny as well) The conflict between her wanting to be her true self and be what everyone wants her to be was nice though, can relate
Pipp and Zipp. As I feared, these two became…eh. I do like Zipp’s progression into being a detective(even though she lets stuff completely fly over her head because the plot says so). But Pipp, goodness sweetie. She’s relatable-and not in the good way. Her social influencer motif is starting to become really grating, and while we do get some moments where that is dialed down some, it gets cranked right back up when you blink. I just hope that she doesn’t become another Flurry Heart in terms of likability.
Locations. I presume that future episodes will start to include the other locals at some point, but as it stands it’s a little…bland. Don’t get me wrong, Maretime Bay is a neat little place, but what about Bridlewood or Zephyr Heights? Something to break up the same town streets, beaches and giant lighthouse that’s vomiting a rainbow.
Audio mixing. This is really nitpicky, and I noticed it in the film, too. Some of the characters’ lines just so nearly overlap each other where there should be a natural pause, while in other spots the pauses are way too long. I’m no sound wiz, but it’s just enough to tickle the “this is mildly annoying” part of my brain that I do feel the need to call it out. Gotta love our corporate overlords constantly rushing out content for money <3
Holding onto hope that things will improve down the line!
