Soo…yeah, I ship these two to the moon. I've been thinking of jumping into the headcanon world for the past few weeks, and creating my own next gen universe for the pony guys. So here goes!

After becoming Dragon Lord, Ember began experiencing the stress of leadership, and inadvertently turned to Spike for comfort as a teenager. She felt she could open up around him, and be herself for once, instead of continuing to wear the mask of authority she has around the other dragons. Several years of courtship and disgruntled flirtation on Ember's part went by, and she finally embraced the idea of being Spike's mate. While they don't live together, they visit one another often on their own little island paradise, and Spike provides her the much needed relaxation she desires with cuddles, kisses and song. Being the naturally supportive guy he is, Spike obliged with literally open arms.

I prefer the idea that Spike is actually an amphibious dragon, considering how well he swam in this last episode. (Like damn, it is not easy to swim with one arm, while carrying an entire other dragon!) Hence also why I won't be designing him with wings.
