Description:

It had been an innocent mistake. If Angelica had known, she wouldn't have brought the paint in; she was a painter as her special talent, but she'd give up the entire thing to stop what she had just caused. She'd take up gardening, anything to match her cutie mark that wasn't going to hurt her big sister like this.
It had started innocently enough; their mother had given her permission to paint out in the barn, as long as she kept out of her big sister, Pegmatite Pie’s way. She was studying in there for her Rocktorate, so she needed peace and quiet.
When Angelica stepped in, reddish pink horn glowing as she carried the red paint into the barn. She made her hoofsteps deliberately so Peggy wouldn't be startled by her. Her big sister was a bit jumpy, she had to be careful. For some reason, Peggy was frightened by magic. “Hey, sis.” She said, Peggy sitting in the corner, studying a rock, the pink pinto turned to face her sister.
“Oh, h-hi, Angelica.” Peggy said nervously, smiling awkwardly. “I'm just working on identifying geodes from, er, tapping on them.” She pointed at two plain granite rocks that Angelica could only assume contained some kind of gemstone inside. “They're a set for beginners, but, uh, it was all they sold at the store…” She frowned, her Manehattan accent showing through when she was nervous, which was very often. “Is it beryl, or agate?” She pointed to the package she had carefully extracted the rocks from.
“Neat.” Angelica had very little idea of what Peggy had said, but appreciated her sister’s enthusiasm. “Mind if I work here too?” She asked, holding up her canvas and paint. Peggy froze up, but quickly shook her head and smiled.
“Oh, t-that's fine…” Peggy smiled, eyes shifting around nervously. “What are you going to, uh, p-paint?” She stumbled over the last word, but Angelica shook it off. Peggy had always had stuttering issues, and at this point she had no reason to suspect anything was out of the usual.
“Oh, just some roses…” She smiled, pausing. “ I know, cliché.” Angelica shook her hips slightly so her flanks were shown off, the rosebuds adorning each one obvious.
“Oh dear Celestia!…” Peggy covered her eyes in embarrassment, causing Angelica to shake her hips further, both of them bursting into laughter, Peggy absolutely mortified but gasping for breath in hilarity. “Please, stop, stop!” She exploded into another round of giggles.
“What, too cheeky?” Angelica grinned, shaking her flanks one last time, then nearly collapsing with laughter, unable to stop herself. “Heh, sorry, sorry!” She panted out. “Sorry, couldn't help it!” She laughed one final time. “Had to take it!”
“It's ok, it's ok!” Peggy was equally out of breath. “It was pretty fun… It was pretty funny!” She paused for breath in the middle of her statement, still giggling too much to finish all at once.
"So what's the deal with the rocks again?" Angelica tried to change the subject, pointing at the nearest geode. "I wasn't exactly paying the closest attention…" She rubbed the back of her neck nervously.
"Oh, it's kind of a toy for Earth Ponies, but I haven't got much to practice with, so it'll have to do." Peggy explained, picking up a geode. "They're geodes, they have little gems inside of them, so the game is to guess which contains a beryl type gem or an agate." She tapped one, listening intently to something only she could apparently hear.
"But they look exactly the same, how are you supposed to know?" Angelica really should have known this, living on a rock farm, but she had to admit she tuned out her stepmom's lectures, she was only in charge of moving rocks from one field to the other or going shopping.
"Earth Pony magic." Peggy said simply, shrugging. "Basically, each kind of gem feels different to Earth Ponies, so the game is to test how sensitive your magic is." She said, tapping the other geode. "But I'm not the best with my magic, so…" She sighed.
"Are you kidding?" Angelica said suddenly, offended on her sister's behalf. "I've seen you Stand Firm on the ceiling before, you have crazy Earth Pony magic! Aunt Maud can't Stand Firm on the ceiling, she stops at the walls!" She expected this to cheer up Peggy; Standing Firm being a powerful innate magic all Earth Ponies had to stay rooted to the ground, no matter what…. but for some reason, this panicked Peggy.
"Y-you… you s-saw that?" Peggy squeaked out, backing up. "T-that's… that's.. w-when did you…" She began hyperventilating.
"Calm down, breathe, sis, breathe…" Angelica's brows furrowed, confused, but more importantly worried about her sister. "I know you're embarrassed about stuff that makes you kinda like Auntie Pinkie, but just because you both Stand Firm doesn't make you just like her…" Angelica quickly recognized the issue; Peggy hated being treated like a younger version of her aunt just because of her looks, it made her frightened for some reason and angry at the same time. And if there was a pony better than their Aunt Maud at Standing Firm, it was their Auntie Pinkie, who could Stand Firm on any surface at any angle… was it even Standing Firm, or something weirder?…. it didn't really matter. "I thought it looked really cool." She added, smiling and holding up her sister's head until she smiled too.
"…T-thanks…" Peggy said softly. "B-but, Standing Firm is… is a-about all that I can actually do… t-that's what's keeping me from my Rocktorate…" She said, deflated and sad.
"Hey, how about I paint us a pretty picture, ok?" Angelica said, lighting up her horn and grabbing the paint bucket with her magic.
"…Ok, t-that sounds… that sounds good…" Peggy said, looking away from Angelica's horn… another thing that was an enigma about her sister, but it didn't matter to Angelica, they were siblings.
"Ok, then it's settled." Angelica smiled, peeling open the can of paint, wrinkling her snout at the pungent odor of wet paint. She began setting up her canvas quickly before she even noticed the sudden silence from her sister, pausing. "Peggy?… PEGGY!?" She screeched, looking at the visage of her sister crumpled to the floor, glasses having fallen to the ground and her hair a tangled mess, knocking over the red paint and causing it to spill and soak into the ground.
————————————————————————————————————————-
Horn bright red, the monster had smoke swirling around it, obscuring everything, and it was all Peggy could do to stay outside of the rampage. She knew her memory of this was faulty, she knew the events that were real, but at the moment, all she felt was this nightmarish version of the events.
"DOWN!" The distorted voice demanded, and it demanded with it, the horn glowing and swirling with power, power and anger, and it took everything for Peggy to not scream, to stay silent, or she'd be next-
————————————————————————————————————————-
"Peggy!" Angelica screeched, staring at her sister's constricted pupils, unable to hear or see anything, too lost in her flashback to recognize the outside world.
"Don't k-kill me!" Peggy begged, not of Angelica, but someone else entirely, and whoever that someone is, Angelica felt the deepest, most burning desire to defend her sister to the death if need be. "Please, p-please, I promise-" She whimpered and then screamed out in terror, and Angelica realized her horn had started glowing with anger, she whacked her horn, sending her into a spiral of pain, but it was worth it to keep her horn down, the first thing she could think of.
"Peggy, it's me, Angelica…" Angelica crawled up to Peggy, holding her sister as the bubblegum pink pinto tried to calm herself, eyes darting around in fear, constricted from her lack of glasses. "Here, let me get that for you…" Angelica dusted off the pair of glasses and put them back on her sister. "Peggy?" She asked again, scared that her sister was lost somewhere they couldn't get her back from.
"..A-Angel…Angelica?" Peggy asked, voice softly, terrified. "W-wha…" She tried to speak, but she was stifled by the scent of the blood red paint on the ground. "O-oh Celestia…" She began sobbing uncontrollably, leaving her sister confused.
"Peggy, it's not blood, don't worry, it's paint, please, don't worry…" Angelica tried to light up her horn to get rid of the paint, but the combination of fear on Peggy's face from the sight of the red glow and the pain from whacking her horn stopped her, and she went back to coddling her sister. "It's not blood, no one's bleeding…"
"I k-know…" Peggy whimpered… "It's p-p-paint…" She stumbled over the word. "I… I met a p-pony once…" She scrunched up her nose, trying to block out the smell, and looked away.
"When!?" Angelica demanded to know, ready to gather her cousins for an assault on somepony who she didn't even know. "Who?"
"I… I don't know their name…" Peggy said, nervous, voice tilting. Angelica could tell her sister was lying, but she didn't interrupt. Whatever it was, she wasn't comfortable telling the truth. "They… they were a p-painter in… in… Manehattan…" She continued. "A-and… t-they hurt a lot of ponies… and… and I was… I escaped…" She rapidly began hyperventilating. "But nopony else did!" She sobbed her eyes out, Angelica horrified, even if she could sense it wasn't the entire story, whatever it was that really happened was horrifying.
"Why didn't you tell anyone?" Angelica asked, nervous, and afraid to test the waters.
"…I didn't know their name… I only remember their horn…" Peggy admitted, scared. "It was bright red and it… it glowed when they… when…" She bit her own hoof to stop herself from crying further. "I… I can't talk anymore…" She said, and Angelica believed her.
If she ever met this mare or stallion, or whatever had done this to her sister, Angelica would not rest until they faced justice, whatever the truth was, they had hurt her sister. And so they stayed there in each other's embrace until Peggy stopped crying, and they left the blood red paint out to dry into the ground.
