When a gaming group gets enough experience that they start to know each other's motivations and boundaries, along with learning some best practices for handling the challenges of the table in a healthy way… that's when you start having consistently great improv and great games, I feel.
Not that there won't ever be friction even after that point, but it takes a long while just to set up a good foundation.
(And for anyone wondering, this is the precise reason why new players can't expect every campaign to turn out as amazing as Critical Role. They've been a gaming group for ages.)
Transcript:
Fluttershy: So Twilight's not… _gone_ gone, right…?
DM: Nah, if this was an instant-death situation, I would have put up way more red flags.
Shining Armor: Getting my sister's character killed is absolutely not the goal here.
Princess Cadance: And even if it *was* on the table, we're the guests here. We would have tripled-checked with everyone first.
Twilight Sparkle: I figured if Cadence tried anything lethal, I'd at least have a shot to defend myself or use some magic of my own.
Applejack: Yep, cutscenes 'r' generally safe at this table. Can't speak for others.
Rainbow Dash: So, what are the rest of us gonna do?
Pinkie Pie: Cause some havoc?
Fluttershy: Probably try to convince at least Celestia that Twilight was right…
Rarity: If we all chime in, especially once Twilight is conspicuously absent… I think all of us together can try to be a more persuasive force.
Pinkie Pie: Wait, why did we sacrifice Twilight again? I feel like no one actually said that part.
Twilight Sparkle: To find the real Cadance.
DM: Twilight was dead-set on the imposter theory, huh?
Twilight Sparkle: Well, in the back of Twilight's mind, she was still hedging maybe "possessed" or "evil twin"… But I feel like, given the difference between what Twilight remembers of her and how she acted all day… one way or another, "this isn't the real Cadance" felt like the only conclusion in-character.
DM: Hmmm. Alright. Still feel like you ended up working backwards in a meta way from playing Ocellus last week, but I'm satisfied you can justify it. I know how much you like to figure these things out intuitively.
Twilight Sparkle: Heh heh. Thanks.
