Applejack gritted her teeth in frustration at the wailing foal in her arms, trying to soothe him to no avail.
Her toddler, Obsidian, whimpered from between her forelegs.
“Momma? He’s too loud. My ears hurt.”
“Don’t we all feel that,” Applejack snarked.
Then, she winced.
“Brackish Billy Bob Waters! Quit yankin’ my tail!”
“Yeah! Cut it out, you daggum idiot!”
“Varmint, let ME handle him!” Applejack snapped at her second eldest, already at her wit’s end.
Summer Beauty ignored her mother's frustration in favor of her own needs and wants. She was not even 10 after all, and even though she was the eldest and should have known a little better, she didn't really understand the concept of waiting or being patient. She approached her mother and flapped her wings in excitement.
"Momma! Momma! Wanna watch me go flying? Daddy taught me a new trick to do in the air last weekend!"
Applejack turned back towards her with a harried expression.
“Summer, hun, can we do it later? Momma’s mighty busy right now.”
Summer began to pout and stomp her hooves, tearing up a bit because she hadn’t gotten time with her momma in a few weekends.
"No Momma! I wanna go flying now! We never get to spend any time together anymore!"
“Ah know and Ah’m sorry.”
Applejack shot her a regretful glance in the midst of tending to the other four little ones.
“But Momma’s got a lot of responsibilities she’s gotta take care of. Maybe some other time, okay?”
"You just like them more than me, don’t you! Just like Daddy likes Tea more than me! Ever since you guys stopped loving each other you didn’t want me anymore!"
Summer said rather confidently, having no knowledge that she was the result of a one night stand. Not that her parents didn’t want her after all.
“No Summer, that ain’t what it is at all! Ah love you just as much as Ah love Varmint and Brack and-“
The little filly spun around before her mother could even finish her sentence, and with that she ran out the door with tears in her eyes.
