title unrelated its just stuck in my mind. this has been sitting in my files for a while now, bc i was gonna upload it with a bunch of other stuff around the twidash wedding - but i never got round to it, so... i'll just upload it by itself lol the reaction of Bow Hothoof and Windy Whistles finding out their daughter was dating the princess, was a lot better than velvet and nightlights - they practically ADOPT twilight. theyre just so excited and so happy their dash has found someone, and just all around adore twilight. super eager to show her all the baby photos they have (much to rainbow's dismay). twilight is, of course, very taken back... suddenly getting all this parental love and open affection she never got.... aauggggghhh - the first time velvet and windy meet is actually at the wedding itself. lord knows why velvet even showed up. maybe out of some sort of obligation she felt she had to fulfil, or some little bit of love, even though she despised everything about it... still though, she put on a smile, as she learned to, and stood and gave her speech and whatever little dance around her daughter wanted - because she loved her, of course. obviously she found the whole thing pretty offensive. the fact that rainbow, and a lot of the pegasi mares at the wedding, were in suits and not formal unicorn wedding attire was pretty annoying...and, of course, the fact so many of the dash family present were... commoners. the lack of proper etiquette, the loud and excited chippering... she just wasnt a fan. Though the wedding is usually about bringing two families together, she stuck to socialising with the canterlot elites and her side of the family that were attending. But inevitably, she does bump into Windy. Windy is a very friendly, sociable mare. she's chatty, and a bit abbrassive, and comes on a bit strong sometimes - but she's determined to get to know everyone. and why wouldn't she extend that to the parents of her daughter-in-law? "Oh!! you must be the inlaw!!" Windy grinned, reaching her hoof out eagerly, "It's nice to finally meetcha! I'm Windy Whistles!" "Velvet Sparkle," she responded coldly, ignoring Windy's hoof. She looked the mare up and down, wrinkling her nose up at the (inappropriate) suit the mare was wearing. Windy didn't seem to notice. "Goodness, weird how we haven't meet before now, huh? Still though, better now than later right?" She chuckled. Velvet gave her a forced grin. "I suppose, yes. You're this... Rainbow Dash's mother?" "Yep! and I-" "And you're happy about the wedding?" Windy paused, a little taken back "Of... course, why wouldn't I be?" Velvet opened her mouth, but Windy carried on speaking, her tone picking up again "and my goodness, I've never been prouder! We always knew Dashie was destined for success, and well, this sure is the cherry on top! Twilight is such a sweet marefriend... no, i should say wife now!" "Sounds like you're quite excited." "Of course! Oh but I'm sure you are too - and you must be so proud, mother of a princess and all. You and your husband have certainly raised a bright young mare." "Yes, we have," Velvet's voice seemed to soften a little. Her eyes drifted over to her daughter, talking happily to her friends on the other side of the room. She fixated on her for a while, the way she seemed genuinely happy.... happier than she'd ever seen her "We're very....." Velvet sighed, "....Well, hopeful." "Oh gosh, I know right - hoping for some grandkids?" Velvet's cold gaze returned to Windy, shocked at how oblivious this mare seemed to be. She held back her desire to scowl, and instead gave her another smile. "Sure, something like that." "Well I'm with you on that one! Can't wait for a little one to spoil rotten - but well, they go at their pace. Not every couple wants a little foal toddling about the place right away.... My husband and I did, obviously," Windy chuckled. "Well... there's no rush, is there." "Certainly not! It might not even be on the table at all. Can't force your kids into things that aren't right for them, right? We just want Dash to be happy." "....Right... though they may not always know what's best for them." "Aah, but you've got to let them figure it out on their own, yknow? Learned that the hard way. All you can really do is support them while they do it." "Even as they walk right into something they'll regret?" "It's hard to watch, but the more you try and stop them, the more they wanna do it. You've just gotta love them unconditionally, right?" "I do love her unconditionally. I just don't want her to walk right into something she'll be worse off for." "... Well-" "After all I am her mother, aren't I supposed to protect her?" Windy blinked. were they still talking about grandkids? "Well, I urr...Sure, you stop em from touching the hot stove when they're foals, but when theyre adults you've got to know when to let go... right?" Velvet shifted her hooves, clearing her throat, "I suppose, if you wanted them to turn out like some sort of... ill mannered miscreant." "....Pardon?" Windy chuckled sheepishly. Had she heard that right? "It was nice to meet you, Miss Whistles. This conversation was very....insightful." Velvet turned, and headed off towards the bar - leaving Windy in a rather stunned silence. --- bow hothoof and nightlight's meeting was probably less interesting tbh, they are two very dad-ish types, would probably get on like a house on fire if he wasnt following velvets orders. they talk about hoofball or something instead of the wedding or their daughters idk lol
