Valentine's Day, or Hearts and Hooves Day, is almost here. And to prepare for the most romantic day of the year, here are some special Valentine's Day-Hearts and Hooves Day pics featuring My Little Pony's couples. First off is Spike the dragon and his Unicorn crush, Rarity.

Ever since he first saw Rarity, Spike was enchanted by the pony fashionista's beauty. Even after they became friends, the little dragon's crush on Rarity never waned. Whenever she needed him for anything, he was more than happy to oblige. From enjoyable tasks, like gem hunting (dragons eat gems), to somewhat painful roles, like being her pin cushion, Spike loved every moment he spent with Rarity, and Rarity was always glad to have him be there for her like a true friend and decent soul.

It was one day before Spike's birthday, and he was preparing his birthday present to himself, an almost-ripe fire ruby that has been "aging [for] months". Rarity came to visit Twilight Sparkle for a book on historical fashion when she spotted Spike's fire ruby, admiring its qualities but was displeased to know Spike intended on eating it. Spike, realizing that Rarity really admired the gem, gave the fire ruby to Rarity, much to his loss. But his broken heart was mended and beating with pure ecstasy when Rarity gave him a kiss on the cheek to show her appreciation for his generosity! He was the happiest dragon that day; he even vowed to never wash the cheek where Rarity kissed it (though Twilight cleaned it against his will). The next day, Spike received gifts from his new Ponyville friends. However, because he got more gifts than he did in Canterlot with Twilight, it resulted in triggering his dragon-hoarding instinct and grew into a gigantic dragon through greed-induced growth. Possessed by his beastly rapacity, the giant Spike went on a rampage across Ponyville. Then, he kidnapped Rarity and climbed a nearby mountain. When Spike spotted Rarity wearing the fire ruby gem he gave her, Rarity told him that she wouldn't let him have it: "This was given to me by my dear friend Spikey-wikey… the kindest, sweetest, most generous dragon ever. And it is too precious to me to give to a greedy old beast like you!" He then remembered when he had willingly given it to Rarity before his birthday. The generous thoughts reversed his growth, returning him to normal. However, he and Rarity plummeted through the air as a result. Looking like they would not make it, Spike tried to confess about his crush, but Rarity stopped him and smiled, her eyes welling with tears. After being rescued by Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy, Spike felt horrible for the damage his rampage had done to Ponyville. But Rarity told him she was proud of him for stopping himself from destroying the town, calling him her hero and giving him another kiss. To this very day, she still thinks of Spike as the most generous dragon she knows. And to this day, Princess Twilight Sparkle's #1 assistant and royal adviser will always treasure the moments he shared with Rarity, and how she will always be the most beautiful pony ever.


I confess I tried to find a good reference of Spike and Rarity's interactions providing inspiration. However, after recalling my Rarity's beautiful pose vector I decided to do something a tad more original. I used one of my vectors of Spike, but changed his expression to give him that enamoured look, since he's the one crushing on Rarity. And speaking of which, I gave the queen of fashion the fire ruby necklace to tie their bond.
