Description:
In honor of my favorite episode of MLP:FIM on it's 9th anniversary, I decided to make an alternate take on the mystery part where the mothers of Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie would solve the mystery of who had taken a bite of the special cake made by The Cakes and Cloudy called the Marzipan Mascarpone Meringue Madness. Just like in the episode itself, Cloudy Quartz shows her MMMM, to her friends, The Mom 6, Twilight Velvet, Pear Butter (yes, in this version, Applejack's mother Pear Butter is alive), Cookie Crumbles, Posey Shy and Windy Whistles. They all gaze on the cake but Cloudy tells them that they cannot eat the cake because it's for the competition and she's looking forward to win. Just then three chefs Gustave La Grand (a griffon with a French accent), Donut Joe, and Mulia Mild, who also brought their delicious sweets (the same ones from the episode) meant for the National Dessert Competition at Canterlot. Just like Pinkie in the episode, Cloudy guards the cake that night but then mysterious shadowy figures zoom past her and Cloudy tries to chase them down but to no avail just like her daughter Pinkie Pie in the real episode. The next morning, Twilight wakes Cloudy up and tells her that her cake might as well be out of competition and when she looks to the other side of the cake, Cloudy sees a horrible sight. The MMMM was partially eaten!
Cloudy knowing her cake was sabotaged, screams, alerting her friends and passengers, and is upset that her cake was partially eaten. The other Mom 6 are also shocked to see that the cake was eaten and then in a heated rage, Cloudy cluelessly accuses the same three chefs, Gustave La Grand, Donut Joe, and Mulia Mild, who also brought their delicious sweets (the same ones from the episode) of eating her dessert, but Twilight Velvet says that is unlikely, but through elaborate fantasies, Cloudy goes on to describe each of the three chefs were like, Gustave being a mustached villain who tied her to the railroad tracks and the cake was cut by a buzz-saw, in which Twilight Velvet dismissed the idea that Cloudy wasn't tied to the railroad tracks and the cake was bitten and not cut. Then Cloudy says that Donut Joe did it, as a Bond-esque spy, who gassed her and made her unconscious, and used a mirror to cut the cake into pieces. Twilight Velvet again sees the flaws in her story and dismisses that ridiculous story by saying there is no laser-beam system and that Donut Joe does not fit into her fantasy description of being a spy. Finally, Cloudy blames Mulia Mild for eating the cake, by saying she sneaked behind her as a ninja and knocked her out with a frying pan and she describes Mild by being a slick and stealthy ninja and cut the cake to pieces with a samurai sword, but Twilight reiterates Cloudy by saying that the cake again was not cut, but bitten, and that Mild is too old and fidgety to be a ninja. Then Cloudy and the other Mom 6 gush on how delicious the other chefs' desserts look, but then the train goes into a dark tunnel and once the train clears, the chef's desserts were bitten into as well! Everypony screams as Twilight Velvet orders to clear the room so she and Cloudy Quartz will investigate as the other ponies, Pear Butter, Cookie Crumbles, Posey Shy and Windy Whistles go into the other car, the one with the desserts.
Cloudy Quartz: Now we just need to find out who done it.
Twilight Velvet: You mean, who did it.
Cloudy Quartz: Exactly. Who did-done-dood it.
As soon as everyone else was out of the car, Twilight Velvet explains to Cloudy that there is definitely a dessert saboteur on the train and he/she might devour the desserts before they make it to the competition. This gets Cloudy to scream but Twilight quiets her down and says that if they are gonna stop the crook(s) they must be detectives and find out who had done it before they arrive at their destination. When Cloudy asks of why Twilight will lead the investigation, Twilight having read many mystery novels, knows that the only way to discover the culprit is to investigate. Then Twilight gets her saddle bag containing her detective equipment, and pulls out a bowler hat and puts it on Cloudy's head and makes her the Dr. Watson of the story, while Twilight puts on her deerstalker (the unmistakable Sherlock Holmes hat) and starts blowing bubbles from her bubble pipe and tells Cloudy that in order to start the investigation, she tells Cloudy to retrace her steps, and Cloudy tells Twilight that she saw a silhouette in the moonlight and then chased the culprit down towards the caboose but when she got there, the culprit was gone. Then Twilight discovers her first clue (though it is hidden from view just like in the actual episode). Cloudy Quartz is excited but Twilight says there has to be more evidence in order to solve the mystery. Twilight then asks Cloudy what happened next, and Cloudy then says she heard somepony else in the dessert car and chased them up to the engine room, but when she got there all she could see was the conductor shoving coal. Twilight knows that conductors do not shove coals on trains, but she finds a second clue in the engineer's hat. Then Twilight asks Cloudy what happened next. Cloudy then went back into the dessert car and the curtains all closed mysteriously on their own, which excites Twilight, then Cloudy remembered hearing hoof steps followed by a loud thud, then they were gone as soon as she opened the curtains. Then she saw the portrait next to the door that became crooked. And then, Twilight notices something stuck to the portrait, but it is difficult to see with the naked eye. So she goes to her saddle bag and reaches for her magnifying glass (not shown in the picture) and with the magnifying glass takes one quick examination and deduces what the third (and final) clue is! With excitement she has found three clues!
Twilight Velvet: By Jove, I think I've got it. Call everypony back! We have a cake culprit to catch!
And so just like in the episode, Twilight Velvet just like her daughter brings everypony and the mule and griffon back in to the car to show them the clues she found.
Mulia Mild: [stuttering] Why are we all here again?
Twilight Velvet: I bet you're wondering why you're all here again.
Donut Joe: She's good.
Twilight Velvet: We have discovered the true culprit of this cake carnage.
Gustave le Grand: But how?
Twilight Velvet: Well, you see, when committing a crime, it's crucial that one never leaves behind clues, especially an obvious clue like… this!
[everyone gasps]
Everyone sees a blue feather and Cloudy Quartz quickly blames it on Gustave, but Twilight says that Gustave doesn't have blue feathers, and the feather belonged to Windy Whistles. Twilight explains that Windy Whistles was the shadowy figure who zipped past Cloudy and when she got to the caboose, Windy hovered close to the ceiling to avoid being seen, and a feather of hers was left behind. Windy says she doesn't like that kind of cake, and Cloudy says that she did it, but the case is not solved yet, as Twilight then shows the second clue which is a strand of rose colored hair, in which Cloudy blames on Windy, but Twilight reassures Cloudy that only Posey Shy has rose-colored hair on her mane. Twilight then deduces that Posey Shy was the shadowy figure who had the train engineer's hat and fooled Cloudy by shoveling coal into the engine. Cloudy then blames Posey but then Twilight reminded her of what happened afterwards when all the curtains mysteriously went down at once as Cloudy tried to catch the culprit. Twilight says that it was magic that brought down those curtains, and the culprit had lost something on the portrait before they could escape, and the final clue Twilight shows is half a set of false eyelashes belonging to Cookie Crumbles. Cookie Crumbles breaks down and says that she had taken a bite out of the cake while also admitting to wearing false eyelashes.
Cookie Crumbles: Fine, I'm guilty! [crying] I wear false eyelashes! Oh, and I took a bite of the cake.
Posey Shy: So did I.
Windy Whistles: Aw shoot, so did I.
With the three of them confessing that they did take a bite out of the cake but only admitting that they wanted a small portion knowing how delectable it was, and Pear Butter admits that she wanted some of the cake, but was too tired and never left her position. Cookie, Posey and Windy all apologize to Cloudy for eating the cake, and Cloudy forgives them. Cloudy at first feels relieved that the mystery is finally solved, but Twilight says that it's not over yet, as they still have to figure out who had eaten the chefs' desserts. Unlike Pinkie Pie in the original episode, Twilight Velvet still plays the part of Sherlock while Cloudy is still Watson, but Cloudy knowing now how to solve a mystery then quickly goes over the chefs and after a brief examination on their faces, Cloudy then reveals that the bakers all have traces of the other baker's confections on them, and deduces that they ate each other's desserts.
Twilight Velvet: Well, Cloudy. Did you find the devourer of the desserts?
Cloudy Quartz: I most certainly did. It was none other than… the bakers!
[everypony gasps]
Cloudy Quartz: First of all, Gustave has mousse in his moustache! And Joe has éclair in his hair! And Mulia has sprinkles in her wrinkles!
The bakers too, like Windy, Posey and Cookie Crumble all admit that they ate each other's desserts, and they forgive each other. But the train then reaches Canterlot with all the desserts destroyed. However, Cloudy has an idea of how they can enter in with their desserts that have been eaten.
Twilight Velvet: Well, everypony, we finally have the mystery solved! (she puts up her deerstalker and pipe away)
Gustave le Grand: Yes, but now we don't have any desserts to enter into ze contest!
Cloudy Quartz: I think we can fix that. Come on!
Cloudy and the group head up to the competition with their newly made dessert—a combination of all the bakers' confections—and concludes that you mustn't accuse others of a wrongdoing without any proof, as it can hurt their feelings and make yourself foolish. They enter, and win the competition and afterwards have cake with Princess Celestia just like the Mane 6 in the original episode, only this time, the Mom 6 have cake one by one but Cloudy since this was her cake, gets the biggest piece and eats it in one gulp. Her friends pause and look at her in disbelief, but then Cloudy smiles with cake crumbs on her face. Then her friends laugh as the episode ends.
And so there you have it, my version of "MMMMystery on the Friendship Express" only with the mothers of Twilight Sparkle and Pinkie Pie, working together to solve the dessert mystery and do pretty much the same investigation as did their daughters did. I worked for a week of putting this story and picture together because I have never done a MLP vector picture before and after learning how to do it through a mix of MS Paint and Photoshop I was able to put the separate vectors together and make it look like it would have been part of the episode! It was a doozy of putting the hats on both Twilight and Cloudy and to put the bag on Twilight and the pipe with bubbles coming out of it. "Elementary, my dear Pie!"
It's no mystery that any pony can be a detective as long as you have good deduction skills and reason!
