Moondust was born into Canterlot's upperclass aristocracy and she had been politically betrothed to a higher status stallion since she was a foal. During a seasonal trip to her family's vacation suite in Manehatten when she was a teenager, she came across a young, wandering, earth pony fortune teller named Sheer Luck who had set up his caravan in an abandoned lot a few blocks down from where she was staying.

They fell in love during her visit and but when her parents found out about their relationship, they were furious. They told her she could abandon her family, status, and wealth for this wandering street performer or come back to Canterlot with them and marry the stallion they had chosen for her to raise her through the ranks. She chose Sheer Luck without hesitation and with that, she was booted from the suite and her parents packed up and returned to Canterlot, stranding her there with no funds. She never heard from her parents again.

Despite all that, Moondust and Sheer Luck were happy. Sheer Luck made a enough bits from his scarily-accurate fortune telling and tarot card readings to keep them afloat and Moondust took on a few odd jobs here and there. She soon found herself pregnant with their first child and they were so excited. But late into her pregnancy, while they were traveling in their caravan between cities, Sheer Luck became terribly ill and couldn't pull the caravan any further. Moondust cared for him for three days and nights, praying he'd get better, but on the dawn of the 4th day, when the sliver of the moon was dipping into the horizon, her husband's luck ran out, and he passed away.

Too far from any civilization to bury him properly, she used her magic to create a makeshift grave for him and set him to rest. She then used her magic to pull the caravan the rest of the way to Ponyville, but she was too weak once she arrived to do much else. A few passerby ponies found her collapses half a mile out from Ponyville near Sweet Apple Acres and she was rushed to the hospital. She stayed there to recuperate and also give birth to her foal, Hollow Shade, who had decided to come early.
