Let's study these gems like we mean it. It's got enchantment type as an index, so let's focus out ward type gems. Since it's what we've got on, wouldn't hurt to know what we've got going and if we can do anything cooler. Let's not get too heavy with the flirting; staying focused here is key, and it leaves some room for Moonflower to make a move.

You begin to search for gemstones that can cast ward spells.

You find that the sapphire is the only gemstone to cast ward spells, and that the version of the ward spell depends on the sapphire's colour.

The three primary colours of the sapphire are blue, green, and red (also known as ruby), which cast ice, air and fire ward spells respectively.

A secondary colour variation of the sapphire casts a ward spell combining the elements of the two adjacent primary colours. For example, a yellow sapphire combines the green sapphire's air and the ruby's fire to cast a half-air, half-fire ward spell.

The pink sapphire combines the blue sapphire's ice and the ruby's fire to create a perfectly neutral ward, known as the crystal (or earth) ward spell.

A rare variation of the sapphire, called the colour change sapphire (or chaos sapphire), casts a random version of the ward spell each time.
