Description:

“I can’t thank Dizzy enough for introducing you to me. I really appreciate you coming all the way here. Us magical types gotta stick together, right?” Andante grinned, opening the door to their room and hovering through while Boo Berry followed closely behind.

“Of course.” The mare smiled slowly in response, eyes already scanning the room as if she was already expecting to see something otherworldly in the siren’s space while she put her bag down. “I’m more than happy to help you reach out to your mother, especially considering the circumstances.”

Not sure of how to proceed, Andante followed her gaze and waited for instructions. When Boo Berry didn’t speak, they decided to ask. “So…is there something I should be doing?”

It took her a moment, as if she was being brought back to reality, and even when she spoke, it was as if the mare was looking through Andante rather than at them. “We need the lights off once I light the candle from my bag.” She muttered, already pulling supplies from her saddlebag to prepare herself.

The candle lit within seconds and Andante quickly flicked the switch to turn the power off, leaving them with only the soft glow of the firelight in the otherwise dark room. Boo Berry laid down, making sure to get comfortable, before motioning for the siren to join them. “Come sit across from me, we’ll both need to focus for this to work.”

Andante couldn’t tell if it was nervousness or excitement that propelled them through the air like a bullet, but they were settling in front of Boo Berry in a flash, tucking their arms to their chest.

“Now,” The mare put her hoof in between Andante’s in an attempt to steady their nerves. “Close your eyes and focus on who you’re trying to talk to. I’ll be doing the same thing, but it’s your call to her that will be the most important.”

“R-Right, got it.” The siren stammered, suddenly feeling the reality of what they were about to do. If Boo succeeded, they would finally be able to speak to their mom, after a lifetime of hearing stories about her without ever getting to meet her. They closed their eyes and focused, thinking hard about a photo that Starlight Glimmer had given them of Sonata when they started at the School of Friendship. Andante’s brow furrowed as they attempted to call out to their mother, even just in their own mind.

“You don’t need to try so hard.” Boo Berry chuckled softly, making Andante open their eyes in embarrassment.

“There’s no reason to laugh at me—” The siren started to retort, before realizing that Boo Berry, whose eyes were now glowing and staring right above Andante’s head, was not laughing at them. The candle, which must have blown out shortly before Boo had spoken up, left the room with nothing but an ethereal light behind Andante and a small wisp of smoke that travelled through the air.

“I’m not laughing at you, my darling. You never need to focus so hard on calling me like I’m far away. I’m always here.” Boo spoke softly, a gentle smile crossing her face. Her eyes never met Andante’s, always looking up at something the siren couldn’t see.

Andante felt their face turn pink, growing more timid than they thought they would. “S-So, you’re my mom?” They asked, desperately hoping Boo Berry wasn’t playing some trick on them.

As if responding without words, Andante’s gem shard started to glow softly. The siren glanced down, then back to the mare in shock, before their gaze softened on the gem fragment once more.

“I-It’s really nice to meet you.” Andante said shyly, feeling a tear well up in the corner of their eye. “…I had all these questions and now I feel like I can’t think of anything to say.”

Boo giggled, Sonata clearly amused by her child. “I get that. When I was pregnant with you, and I knew that only one of us could survive with the little bit of magic I had left, there were so many things I wanted to ask you. I wanted to know if you looked like me, if you’d grow to love singing, what your favorite color would be. I wanted to know everything, but there wasn’t enough time for both of us.” The mare’s voice grew sad, as if Sonata’s memories were flooding her brain, leaving both Boo and Andante with tears in their eyes.

Trying to hold back tears, Andante bit their lip and looked away, blinking furiously. One muted sob escaped their throat before the siren could hold it back, making tears run down Boo Berry’s cheeks in response.

“Don’t cry, sweetie. It’s okay.” Sonata comforted her child through the mare, not being able to do anything but speak. She longed to hold them tight in her arms and never let them go, but all she could do was hope her words were getting through to them.

“It’s not okay!” Andante cried, quickly wiping away the tears that ran down their face. “You’re not here, and neither is Dad. I know he doesn’t know how to handle me without you, and I know everything would be better if you were around.”

Boo Berry let out a shaky breath. “My poor baby. I wish I could be there, even just for a second. But don’t forget, I am always with you. See?”

Once again, Andante’s gem fragment glowed. The siren sobbed, trying their best to choke back tears even though it was already too late. There was no pretending now.

“Three glows means I love you, got it? You will never be alone, not really.” Boo Berry smiled softly once again, before fading once again. “I can’t stay much longer, it’s not good for the pony who I’m speaking through. Make sure you take care of her, okay?”

Andante nodded. “Got it. And I will.”

“I love you, Leafy.” Boo said softly, before her eyes returned to normal and the glow faded away, leaving the two in a dark room. The mare, exhausted from channeling the spirit, slumped against Andante suddenly.

With a bit of adjusting, the siren adjusted themselves so Boo Berry rested against their side, with Andante’s tail wrapping around her to keep her cozy and close. Boo muttered something incoherent before falling asleep, her head on Andante’s shoulder.

With a free leg, Andante wiped away the last of their tears and sighed, before a soft glow on their chest caught their attention.

1…2…3 times.

“I love you too, Mom.” Andante whispered, their hoof tapping the gem fragment softly in response.
