Gruncle Gonsod or Great Uncle Gonsod is an old Griffon from Griffinstone and one of Grandpa Gruff's best friends, along with the other elders of Griffinstone. He's Guno's Great Uncle.

Personality

Gonsod can be grumpy, grouchy and rather strict, especially to his grandnephew, Guno. He always speaks his mind and doesn't hesitate to joke around his friends. He's a sarcastic smart mouth who thinks of himself as "the voice of reason" in his group of friends, since he's the one who always knocks some sense into others, as well as the most serious between his friends. He is portrayed as the easygoing "straight man" to counterbalance his friends' more eccentric personalities. He is also the most considerate and thoughtful among them, demonstrated when he gives Gilbert a replacement quill during making a care package for Gruff, defends Gruff's point of view behind his lies about his upbringing when others think he tricked them, and agrees to pull jokes on the castle staff with his companions in order to keep them out of trouble. He's also very empathetic and really good at giving advice. He's also somewhat very nervous and flustered at times, which is mostly shown when he's a youngster and is around Gruff, indicating that he indeed had a fondness for him (even though part of it was due to dehydration, the admiration was real). Bits of it show even in the present day when Gruff attempts to fluster him over it. Grandpa Gruff also describes Gonsod as rather clingy, as he usually clutches on him when he's scared or upset, implying that he can also be a scaredy-cat at times. Despite his 'oppressive' nature, his love and care for his family knows no limits.

Even though he's considered as the "straight man" and the "voice of reason" in his friend group, he can be just as clueless and have as many ridiculous schemes as the rest of his friends. He also has a feminine side, as he uses a handbag, likes wearing "cute-looking" aprons (especially when cooking or cleaning) and doing his claws (just sharpening and polishing them, not painting them), and is perfectly comfortable wearing 'girly' accessories when needed in occasions, such as playing with the cubs when he helps Gruff look after them. He gets annoyed rather easily and, although normally friendly, he does have something of a temper. He likes making witty and sarcastic remarks to get in the skin of others, especially when he refers to Gruff (something the latter happily reciprocates). Despite his intelligence and rationality, he is not without his moments of idiocy and, as said above, he can be full of crazy schemes.

Appearance

Gonsod has a lot of scars on his claws, wings, tail and arms while he has a left wooden leg and he no longer has his left eye. He wears an eyepatch there and the scars on his eye are still pretty visible. He also wears two bandages, one on his right arm and another one on his tail.

However, it's been revealed that Gonsod's 'bandages' are actually armbands and that the injuries on his arm and tail were healed long ago, implying that, unlike his eye, leg, and ears, they weren't permanent, although there are a few little scars on the 'bandaged' areas. Gonsod claims to wear them because they're a part of who he is, as well as for medical reasons.

Relationships

Guno

Gruncle Gonsod is often very strict to his grandnephew, grounding him every time he does something disrespectful or something Gonsod doesn't appreciate and even making him sleep in the attic sometimes, depending on his 'crimes'. He's often very cold towards him, even calling him humiliating nicknames like "Gibbering Goose-rump", and the two argue quite a lot as "their way of communication", as they put it. However, despite his cruel behaviour towards him, it doesn't come out of hate. In fact, he secretly loves Guno unconditionally but believes acting that way will "toughen him up", much like Grandpa Gruff does with Gallus.

Grandma Gracelynn

Gonsod loved his sister dearly and was rather protective towards her. He was devestated over his sister's passing and wears her neck bandana accessory since.

Grandpa Gruff

Gruncle Gonsod and Grandpa Gruff are best friends since they were young and occasionally the worst of enemies. The two were roommates for a couple of years when the rest of their friends got married, before Gonsod moved into his family's house, until he moved back for a few weeks to help Gruff take care of Gallus when the cub and elder first met.

Gruff teases Gonsod all the time by calling him with the nickname "Pirate Parrot'' as a joke due to his injuries, their other friends joining him sometimes, something the elder doesn't really appreciate. He does get payback, however, by calling Gruff "Brood Mother" due to him taking care of the cubs, also accompanied by their friends. Being the only ones in their friend group of six who aren't married (mainly because they're not into the 'romance junk' and because no one showed real interest in them) is basically one of the reasons they stand next to each other more times than they do with others (besides their grandkids/ grandnephews). The one finds comfort in the other's company and the fact that they're not the only 'third wheel' in their group.

The two trust and care about each other, but still take pleasure in constantly annoying one another or simply goofing off together. Ever since they were young, and according to their friends, there's been a lot of playful banter and friendly ribbing between them. Gruff is a playful teaser (much like his grandson, Gallus), and enjoys poking fun at Gonsod the most, and vice versa. They both take the teasing as what it is, friendly ribbing and not something devious.

As teenagers, Gonsod would often take the heat whenever Gruff got himself in trouble with his sarcastic comments, short temper, and pranks. In return, Gruff became the "voice of reason" for Gonsod whenever he didn't think things through quite well and brought him back into reality.

Since Gruncle Gonsod is very empathetic and a good advice giver, Gruff feels more comfortable around him when it comes to expressing his feelings than the rest of his friends, who would either pry too much (Grandpa Gyeong and Grandpa Gareth), worry too much (Grandpa Gideon) or not worry much at all (Grandpa Gilbert), and Gruncle Gonsod feels more comfortable around Grandpa Gruff when he needs support in order to stay chill under pressure, because Grandpa Gruff's jokes help him relax.

Since it is unknown if Gruff felt the same way back when Gonsod had a crush on him (part of it was him being dehydrated), it's been hinted that he was aware of it (since Gonsod isn't very good at hiding feelings) and was rather fluttered. However, he didn't show it because he knew Gonsod would panic. Still, over the years, Gruff occasionally has started to appear slightly bashful when he is around Gonsod, implying that he's starting to reciprocate Gonsod's admiration. Grandpa Gilbert remarks that the two bicker like an old married couple, much to the duo's embarrassment, Gallus' amusement, and Guno's confusion and obliviousness.

Grandpa Gilbert

Grandpa Gilbert and Gruncle Gonsod have a strong relationship like all best friends do. However, he doesn't exactly appreciate Gilbert's attempts to find significant others for him and Grandpa Gruff, especially when putting them on dating games.

Grandpa Gyeong

Gruncle Gonsod and Grandpa Gyeong do not have many rivalries, but they still have big interactions, especially when it has to do with Gyeong's stubborness and flaw to jump into conclusions without having all the facts. Still, they're great friends and get along very well. He also greatly appreciates Gyeong for carving a wooden leg for him when a hydra ate it.

Grandpa Gareth

Gruncle Gonsod and Grandpa Gareth have few interactions, but have a decent friendship. The two share a thirst for knowledge and learning new things, as well as an interest in pirate books. Though, much like the rest of the Senior Group, he often has a hard time understanding what Gareth is saying when he tries to explain something he knows.

Grandpa Gideon

Grandpa Gideon acts like a baby brother mostly with Gruncle Gonsod, much like he does with Grandpa Gruff, as they are Gideon's oldest friends and they both act like the oldest big brothers mostly with Gideon, such as being overprotective and not getting very annoyed with Gideon's antics unlike the other three in their group. Gruncle Gonsod practically ends up babying Gideon at times, mostly in their youth, unlike Grandpa Gruff and Grandpa Gilbert's more teasing-like approaches, much to the latter's often annoyance. Despite his protection of Gideon, Gonsod values him just as much as his other friends. Despite this, they work well together and are pretty close.

Gallus

The two don't interact that much, but they seem to be in good terms. Gruncle Gonsod helped Grandpa Gruff take care of Gallus for some time, when the latter was a cub, so he most likely sees him like a son-grandson, himself. He also likes it when Gallus asks him for help when he wants to pull a prank on Grandpa Gruff.

Grandpa Gillian

Both being salesgriffons, Grandpa Gillan and Gruncle Gonsod are always at each other on who is the best grower or who takes better care of their harvests. Gillan finds amusement in gibbering Gonsod by saying that Griffons rightfully choose his 'ginger goodnesses' (oranges) instead of Gonsod's 'bleak bronzes' (carrots), which is usually enough for the other Griffon's blood to boil.

Grandma Gwyneth

Gruncle Gonsod and Grandma Gwyneth's relationship is pretty similar to Grandpa Gruff and Grandma Grizel's; one merely tolerates another's presence. Gwyneth was in love with Gonsod, but he wasn't very interested, although he was pretty flattered that a girl actually liked him that way. In the past, she had frequently played lovers' games with Gonsod and would get frustrated or even angry when he did not take the bait, which sometimes he would fake. He does like Gwyneth, but only as a friend, though their friendship is occasionally strained by her strong personality and bossiness toward him.

As they grew older, Gwyneth developed a crush on another Griffon, her husband, whom she chose over Gonsod, who accepted this and was happy for his friend. This didn't cause a rift between them (they never were together anyway) and they remained good friends. Although, after her dear husband passed away, Gwyneth is considering proposing to Gonsod, implying that her crush on him might be growing again, possibly even more intently than Grizel's unrequited crush on Gruff, which the latter hopes that never happens. That's one more thing he and Grandpa Gruff can relate to.

Grandma Grizel

Even though they both had a liking for Gruff, they never saw each other as rivals (except for a few times when they were young) and have positive interactionsto this day.

Cause of Scars

The reason Gruncle Gonsod has such an injured body is because when he, Grandpa Gruff, and their other friends were a bit younger, back when they were still soldiers at King Guto's service, a Hydra had attacked them. Even though they managed to escape from that creature's claws very easily, it caught Gonsod and ate his foot and ripped out his eye. To this day, Gonsod curses the four-headed beast and declares that if he ever finds that Hydra again, he'll make it regret the day it first saw him.

Skills

Strength

Gruncle Gonsod possesses incredible physical strength, despite having a wooden leg, due to, as he explains, years of packing and unpacking crates with vegetables. However, he's not stronger than Grandpa Gruff, as shown in Warm Hearted during their arm wrestle.

Close combat

Despite Gruncle Gonsod's down-to-earth and empathic personality, he shows a propensity for brute force. He mostly uses his martial art skills during fights (especially bar fights) he and his friends get to with their frenemies, Grandpa Garvey, Grandpa Gillan, and Grandpa Gino.

Athleticism

Gonsod possesses a good amount of athletic abilities, despite his injuries.

Cooking

Gonsod has quite the "claws for cooking", which is hinted when he baked a small carrot cake for Gruff. The two even used to bake Gruff's Griffinscones together, sometimes, as it was revealed in an Instagram story.

Playing musical instruments

Gruncle Gonsod demonstrates an affinity for playing musical instruments, usually stringed ones, especially the acoustic guitar. Whenever Griffons gather together, he takes hold of the music touch in every story told. He also seems to know a thing or two about playing the electric guitar.

Singing

Playing the guitar a couple of times, he is familiar with singing. He's usually accompanied by Grandpa Gruff, the two often switching between harmony and melody.

Songwriting

Although Gruncle Gonsod plays/ sings traditional songs, he sometimes writes a few songs of his own.

Dancing

Despite his injuries, he has exceptional skills in dancing, especially the tango-like kinds. His skills are mostly shown when he and Grandpa Gruff "show their grandchildren-grandnephews how it's done". Grandpa Gyeong's father was a dance teacher and might have taught them a few of the things they know.

Gonsod used to have a small crush on Gruff when they were young, but it didn't last very long, and part of it was a result of him being delusional due to dehydration. Their friends knew about it and, even today, they tease them over it, much to the two elders' annoyance. Despite this, both Gruncle Gonsod and Grandpa Gruff were retconned into being best friends, instead of anything else. It is unknown whether Gruff felt the same way back then.
