Torch had drilled his daughter on Manechurian etiquette and told her to stay the Tartarus away from all the drama. Things were going well at first, despite the Dragon Lord and her father being lodged in separate palaces. Ember was courteous in the right contexts and silent when she needed to be. She was given permission to wear special gem crowns and was gifted a fancy dress to wear to a banquet, which even had the Dragon Lands coat of arms embroidered on it. When she received her flower pot-soled shoes, she understood why her father had made her walk on stilts for weeks.
Being the Dragon Lord and a dragoness put Ember in a strange position, especially at her tender age. Many of the court officials were incredibly dismayed by her status as a head of state, but didn't dare say anything about it publicly; the Emperor and Empress had both taken a liking to her. The Noble Consort had no reason to dislike her, though the Dragon Lord's unusual presence did provide ample opportunity for her to scheme against the other concubines. Ember wasn't collateral damage and that's the important part.
However, Ember is still a young, fire-breathing dragon. It became physically challenging for her to be this restrained. Things began going wrong soon after she decided to give herself a secret 'cheat day'. The floodgates were open. Between eunuchs and palace maids begging her to stop playing risky games and her inappropriate interactions with the 212th princess, the Emperor was no longer enamored of her. Ember and her father were put under house arrest in the same palace for the remainder of the trip and while the young Dragon Lord was having an outburst, Torch questioned his own parenting style. Though Torch managed to pull some strings for his daughter, mitigating a lot of the damage, their relationship was strained for months.
