With the Crystal Empire being ruled by Cadence and Shining Armor now he felt like he had lost his purpose. He was raised to rule the kingdom, nothing else. And now he didn't have too. Upon his return he saw only crystal ponies, no Umbreons were in the empire. To make matters worse no one knew what he was taking about, for no one had ever heard of an Umbreon. The only connection anyone made was he looked like King Sombra before he turned evil. This made crystal ponies fear him. When he got to the castle he was given a tour, that tour ended with the Crystal Heart. But upon seeing it, he turned around in pain. His eyes burned horribly and he nearly went blind. After his recovery he had to wear glasses or he couldn't see. And he never went near the Crystal Heart after that, worried about what it would do to him next. He often wondered what happened to his kind and why they weren't in the Crystal Empire anymore. Cadence showed him Sombra's old journal, and he spent weeks in his old study/Sombra's study trying to find the connection. Meanwhile Lunar and Solar had started helping Twilight and Cadence rewrite the history books with the missing royals and figure out the missing chunk of Equestria's history. It wasn't until he found another journal that he finally figured it out. His father had taken the throne again after he vanished in Canterlot, without an heir he had another daughter. That daughter was the great, great, grandmother of the one known as Queen Rabia, the mother of King Sombra. The Umbreons had become the Umbrums and Amore had exiled them when she became the new ruler. He confronted Cadence with this and she revealed she had known about it but hoped he would stop, she didn't want him to turn out like Sombra. Whose pony look had been modeled after ancient rulers, aka Stellar's family. She showed him what the Umbrums looked like now and where they were trapped. He couldn't believe his kind had become those horrid creatures. If they could turn Sombra back into what they used to look like, why couldn't they do it to themselves? Be reformed and go back to their home? He had to find King Sombra and figure out how they did it to him, maybe he could save his kind.
