Somewhere far beyond the reaches of Equestria, there is a land that sits between the known and the unknown, creating a bridge from life to death, which all creatures must one day walk across into the infinity beyond. This land, though feared by many, is a peaceful and constant place, where all are welcomed with open arms, their pasts thrown to the fires of history to be forgotten or forgiven. The overseer of this land is a benevolent— if enigmatic— goddess by the name of Mortila, who sees to the souls of the departed, and guides them through her land, to their final paradise. She appears to most in the form of a large violet unicorn with eyes as sharp as diamond, who towers over mortals like an endless sky. And though she is intimidating, her heart is pure, and she is quick to grant amnesty if one has learned their lesson and forgiven themselves. By her side is a much smaller mare, who dutifully wields a large scythe, prepared to banish any unruly souls to Tartarus and protect her goddess against all threats. This mare, Avita, is Mortila's emissary, whom the goddess created to serve her. Together, the two ponies guard the realms of life and death, and keep balance in all the lands.

I like them both a whole lot and the unicorn was the perfect design for the goddess of death I'd imagined for Equestria, so it worked out!
The official name I have for the Equestrian equivalent of heaven is the Afterworld, which makes Tartarus hell, I guess.
