They're all teenagers who ran away from home and found each other along the way. They travel around, doing whatever they can for money, enjoying each other's company and seeing the world. They're all super close friends— practically family at this point— and don't really trust any ponies besides themselves.

From left to right:
Gadget, the talented musician who's responsible for most of the bits the group earns. He plays on street corners, in parks, outside markets, wherever there's a lot of ponies that may be willing to throw him some spare change. He's usually assisted by Susan the chicken, the group's pet, who dances along to the music and always attracts a crowd. His parents were the owners of a huge factory that specialized in steel production, and they raised him to follow in their hoofsteps. He subtly rebelled against them his whole life, as he didn't want some boring job as a factory manager. When he got his cutie mark for music, his parents tried to stifle his artistic passion by making him work in the factory. He dealt with this for a year before he finally got sick of it and left. His parents looked for him, but gave up after a while, as they had his siblings and their work to worry about.

Fury Flare, the curious reporter whose interrogation and detective skills can be unexpectedly useful to the group. Specifically, when they need to blackmail someone into giving them somewhere to stay, or something to eat. His father— who was a single dad— passed away when he was fairly young. Since his dad worked for the royal guard, they took it upon themselves to raise him. The loud and intimidating stallions that were a bit rough around the edges, but they genuinely cared about him, and wanted him to have a good life. When he turned sixteen, they let him go off on his own, with nothing but a few bits and whatever he had learned from his years with them.

Delightful Laughter (Delilah), the brutish and brash fighter of the group who doesn't take any nonsense from anypony. She'll fight anyone— huge, buff ponies who look like they could tear her to shreds, snooty high-society unicorns who think less of her for being a "mudpony", random ponies off the street, herself… She just loves punching ponies. This habit is what got her kicked out of her home. She was born into a wealthy and respected family in Manehatten who wanted their daughter to be the perfect lady. Polite and quiet, but still intelligent and articulate— none of which describe Delilah. She was a complete horror to raise, especially in such an uptight family. She fought with her siblings and schoolmates, got into trouble every other day, and absolutely hated being told what to do. Her parents finally snapped when she got her cutie mark, and kicked her out of the house, saying she could go stay with her cousin across town, and come back when she was suited to be a part of the family. Instead, she left Manehatten with her head held high, and never returned.

Harmony Riversong (Harrison), is the ditzy one of the group. He was abandoned as a baby on the doorstep of a small farmhouse. The old stallion living there took him in, and raised him. The stallion was strict and a little old-fashioned, but overall kind. Harrison tended to the farm's animals, feeding and grooming and playing with them. When he was eight, the government of the city the farm was in found out that the old stallion had adopted the child without properly registering him in the system, and they attempted to take him away. In a last ditch effort to keep Harrison away from society and the law, the stallion gave him all the bits he had (not a very large amount), and sent him away. Harrison took his best friend, a chick he'd named Susan, and left the farm. He and Susan traveled for several years on their own— even though he had plenty of bits, Harrison often got food for free on account of him looking like a homeless child, which he was. By the time he met the three ponies who'd become his family, Susan was fully grown, and Harrison wasn't far behind.
