It's arguable that cosplay shouldn't exist at all, insofar as it is part of con culture. At least in the US, con culture has always been creepy and seedy around the edges. See also, Walter Breen. But that's depressing.
Only decently attractive women should cosplay, yet the norm is quite the opposite. What's the reason? Attention. An attractive woman doesn't need a nice costume to get attention from men, so the few who do it probably have a genuine interest. Unattractive women have to resort to unusual measures, such as cosplay, to attract any fans.
Also, they're actually fairly fit and attractive, unlike the four hundred pound hamplanet cosplayers tooling around every con on Rascal&tm; electric scooters. It even looks like they're actually women and not troons. Compared to some of the mind-scarring sights I've seen at cons, this is pretty amazing.
