This is for an AU detached from my Ginverse and takes place in the regular timeline, not next gen. It derived from an odd dream I had one night, so I decided to expand upon it.
Empress Mi Amore Cadenza
Also known as "Cadance" for short, this legendary lady takes the "lead" role amongst the Equestrian hierarchy (like how Celestia was the main princess in the original source material). She is the Empress of Love, or more popularly known as "The Queen of Hearts", gaining the title after bringing love and peace back to a city full of misery and hate. This alicorn is ancient, being around 10,000 or so years of age. Normally, age is just a number to alicorns, and isn't reflected physically, but Cadance's appearance is taking on a similar affect to Mistmane. This is due to constantly having to "charge" the Crystal Heart with her magic on a daily basis to keep her Empire protected from the Frozen North's blizzards and dangerous creatures. Speaking of dangerous creatures, Cadance is heavily battle worn, with scars littering her body, though it never discourages or embarrasses her; she considers them stories to tell. Currently, besides being an empress, she works to teach about being a royal to the younger nobles; Celestia and Sombra.
Princess Celestia
Casually known as "Tia" with her full name being "Celestial Spring", this 25 year old mare is the Princess of the Sun, commonly referred to as "The Sunkissed Monarch". She was born and raised up under the care of two wizard brothers- Starswirl the Reclusive and Stygian the Great- and was expected to be an answered prayer for the sun's soon-to-be shortcoming, as seen in a prophecy. She did indeed turn out to be the prophesied one, as, when the sun failed to fully rise, she took charge; her magic so powerful that it helped to aid it. She now works to aid in the rising and setting of the sun, and seems to do so with ease. Some things to note about Tia is that she can be quite a clumsy ditz, and she doesn't fully take her responsibilities as princess as serious as she should quite yet; but besides that, she's loyal and seemingly carefree, always trying to do what is right in the most pacifistic way possible (though don't be fooled, she will fight if she's asked to).
Nightmare Moon
Once known as "Lunar Crater" or simply "Luna", this frightening 22 year old mare is a mere shell of what used to be Celestia's sister. The prophecy mentioned before told of the moon refusing to move for the sun, and that a child of the dark would aid it in its movement. Raised alongside Celestia by Starswirl and Stygian, she was destined for greatness… or so they all thought. When that day came to be, Celestia moved the sun as everyone expectantly awaited for Luna to move the moon out of its way. She tried her darndest too, her magic roaring and crackling as much as it was able… but she failed. She couldn't do it. And before she could even attempt it a second time, the moon gained a very pale green aura around it… and it began to move as it should. Racked with jealousy and disbelief, she ran away, escaping into the snowy depths of the north. There, in a hidden cave she grieved. Her entire life had been a lie, and if she couldn't be who she was supposed to be, then she'd just have to make everyone bow into submission and love her. She began studying dark magic, and, with the help of the once hidden alicorn amulet, birthed the Tantabus- which gave her both strength and insanity; and thus emerged the great evil known as "Nightmare Moon: The Queen of Fear". Nightmare Moon gave way to many things; the wild Everfree Forest, Timberwolves, and bat ponies to name a few.
Prince Sombra
So who was it that made the moon move? Why, it was Sombra, of course! A battle hardened umbrum and a straggler separated from his clan in the blinding storms of the Frozen North, he came across the town of Canterlot while looking for shelter and supplies. It was on that day that he caught wind of the "Celestial Awakening", which he of course had to take part in witnessing. The whole thing was incredibly grandiose, and he was amazed he was even here to see it, watching the two ponies meant to fulfill this task from a cliff above. As he and the rest of the public eye noticed that the moon was failing to move, a twinge filled his mind and he buckled. Out of nowhere, his horn roared to life without him hardly thinking, as he took hold of the moon, moving it out of the way. Sombra was bewildered at what he had just did, and slowly everything began to click into place. Him being separated from his group, him ending up in Canterlot, and him witnessing this ceremony… it was his purpose to be "The Lunar Noble". After the ceremony had ended and Luna had ran away, he approached; stating how it was he that moved the moon. Celestia and the two wizard brothers were shocked to learn this, and took him in straightaway; opening the gateway to his brand new life as a royal.
Some little tidbits
~Sombra is scared to even slightly get on Cadance's bad side because of her connection to the Crystal Heart, which is a known weakness to the Umbrum
~Sombra and Celestia have a sort of frenemy/sibling rivalry most of the time, and they tend to tease and bicker; but past all that, they'd surely lay down their life for one another
~Cadence (before her ascension) at one point almost died to a unicorn horn, which was driven into her chest close to her heart
~Cadance and Celestia are ascended alicorns, meaning they were not born as one (Cadance was a pegasi and Tia was a unicorn)
~Sombra cannot ascend into being a true alicorn due to his full umbrum lineage
~Every royal is given three things upon becoming one. The first two are symbols in their eyes and marks on the right side of their necks pertaining to their role; the third is a crown gifted by a royal wizard.
~Unlike the other two royals, Sombra tends to be more "out in the field" when it comes to doing duties as he sees fit. One of said duties is to "protect Equestrians", which he achieves by tagging along with the Mane Six to help them fight evil
~Nightmare Moon is the source of… well… nightmares. She hopes to achieve full control by doing this
