bug bug bug!!!! this is a combo changeling headcannon and chrysalis headcannon so lets go. starting with the chrysalis headcannon!!
Queen Chrysalis of the Changelings
(she/her/it/its, agender, pansexual)
-like all changelings, she falls into the pony uncanny valley in her true form, her proportions and movement differ just enough from ponies that many find her uncomfortable to look at when they first meet her. Even her reformed body is slightly unsettling to some.
-she was born to be a queen. the previous queen of her hive selected her larva to raise up to lead, and chrysalis was fed royal jelly from a very young age, and was never assigned worker duties. very spoiled princess!
-by the time she was queen, most changeling hives were love-starved and sickly, so she accepted her role as a tyrant and thief as normal. the holes in her carapace are very painful but she was under the impression that all changelings were just supposed to deal with that.
-after her most recent defeat, instead of being turned to stone, she begged Celestia to accept a proposal of marriage. This marriage would unite her hive and the ponies, feeding her people and protecting her, while the ponies would be safe from attacks under the promise to give their love freely and through ambient feelings. Celestia accepted after encouragement from temporary king Thorax, who hoped his queen was seeing reason.
-The two married and both bore children, Celestia through a donor, and Chrysalis through natural changeling queen reproduction, with an anonymous male mate as the other parent. Together they had Golden Horizon, a son and alicorn, and Mantis, a changeling daughter and future queen of the changelings.
-Tia lived separately for many years, co-parenting their children. It was only through their shared love for their children that they began to love one another in a strange and imperfect way. After 25 years of marriage, they renewed their vows, this time meaning them. Chrysalis transformed into the beautiful moth-like queen she was born to be, and her and Celestia now share their lives and love with one another.
ok general changeling headcannon time!
-there are only two 'sexes' in changeling society, queens and workers. Queens lay eggs, with unfertilized eggs hatching into workers, and fertilized eggs hatching into queens. gender expression amongst workers vary wildly, but the majority of hives have several worker 'genders', the hive from which thorax and comes from has gatherers, soldiers, caretakers, and terafomers. Gatherers leave the hive to collect love and the energy it provides, and distribute it throughout the hive, and are the most numerous. they are expected to be boisterous and antsy. soldiers protect the hive and fight in wars with other changelings over resources. Pharynx is a soldier and exhibits their most distinct traits: unfriendly, territorial, and possessive. Caretakers were very uncommon in the past, being the changelings who watch after the clutches of eggs and raise them. Thorax was a caretaker, and this is shown in his placid and nurturing personality. last are terraformers, changelings who build and maintain the hives. They are clever and meticulous, and are known to be quite snippy when their work is meddled with.
-because the hive was without a queen in Chrysalis' absence, Thorax, a chartaker, took up the mantle of queen while creating royal jelly to feed to Ocellus, who was a natural queen. Ocellus is aware that she will be queen some day, but plans to abdicate once Mantis comes of age.
-changelings in the past were always starving, and fought endlessly both among themselves and with other creatures for love. Chrysalis' hive was so close to death, that many of her subjects spent most of their time in a state of torpor, sleeping deeply between meals to conserve their energy. Starvation to this degree leads to poor and incomplete molts that are full of holes or have weak spots. The holes in their carapace expose the sensitive tissue beneath, and the exposed areas are very painful. the constant pain makes them irritable and quick to snap, leading many outsiders to think that all changelings are naturally unkind and dangerous.
-reforming and completing that first healthy molt covers those wounds, but many older changelings, like Chrysalis, deal with chronic pain due to a lifetime of poor health.
