You're missing the point entirely. You can either be the one who is turning into something or be the one who watches others turn into something. BDSM analogy is my way of portraying this divide.
But like you said, most people aren't into domination. All they want is to be something else. And as long as they understand life from fiction there's no harm in entertaining the idea.
