So with the idea of my ameteur rewrite of MLP the movie fresh in mind, I thought I'd finally introduce the film's villain in all her glory: Insight Sparkle. She replaces the Storm King as the antagonist of the film and is also a way to make the story feel more interpersonal for the characters, especially Twilight. One thing that I found odd about the Storm King is the fact that he and his army just sort of show up. There's no history or intrigue; he just appears and wreaks havoc. Most of the major villains (Save for Chrysalis and Cozy Glow) have backstories related to Equestria itself, or at the very least the royal sisters. Tempest is given a bit of backstory (which is why she would have made for a better villain, as I've explained.) but I still wanted to take things in a different, more interesting direction.
One element of the canon film that I think could have been explored more is Twilight's self-doubt with her ability to run the Friendship Festival, primarily due to the immense pressure she feels to ensure its success. As the Princess of Friendship, she sees the festival as a reflection of her leadership and role in fostering harmony among ponies. Twilight’s perfectionist tendencies and her fear of disappointing her friends and subjects amplify her insecurities. And it's this arc that she goes through that results in the creation of Insight, a version of herself created through a potion that she uses to "enhance" her confidence. When she drinks too much and the spell goes haywire, Insight splits off from Twilight and becomes her own entity, believing herself to be superior to her counterpart and is bent on replacing her as the princess of friendship, becoming a major obstacle for the rest of the film. It's very much a play on the phrase "You are your own worst enemy."
That's the basic gist of my concept behind Insight so far. I'll go into more details in later entries, but for now, enjoy her design. :)
