In a distant universe, the Lords of Order and Chaos imbued the orphan human who would become Equinox with both of their realms' magics, with the sole purpose of maintaining the eternal balance between good and evil. Over time, Equinox would become overwhelmed by the crushing burden of his task and set out to fulfill his own twisted vision of balance. This misguided quest would come to a head when Equinox ascended to godhood after absorbing the energies of the Lords of Order and Chaos, only to be swiftly defeated by Batman and Doctor Fate.

But this would not be the end of Equinox's tale.

In the ensuing cosmic battle, Equinox's consciousness was shattered into a dozen fragments that were scattered across time and space. Through the slimmest of chances, one of those fragments — which embodied Equinox's conviction — landed in the mystical realm known as Equestria. After arriving in the vibrant land of sentient ponies, the fragment of Equinox's essence took on the physical form of a majestic-yet-imposing alicorn. From afar, Equinox observed Equestria's inhabitants and their fanatic dedication to friendship, hope, and harmony, which deeply contradicted his corrupted version of balance that encompassed both light and darkness in equal measure. In his warped mind, Equinox concluded that Equestria's harmonious nature tipped the scales too far toward order and benevolence. This cartoonish dimension was an abomination, a blight, an imperfection that needed to be rebuilt from the ground-up.
