Description:

The self checkout machine always yells at me to replace the item removed from the bagging area, but it's only because I'm spending an extra 2 seconds to grab another bag.

This comic was inspired by that. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I don't know. At least at some places it doesn't. Where I usually shop I can put the bags into the cart before paying, and it lets me do it.

Not an expert but I am making a wild guess that most supermarket self checkout lines have a scale built into the stand that holds the bags, and if it detects a weight increase not matching what the store's database says that can of beans you just scanned weighs, it does that. Not every can of beans has an RFID. RFIDs cost money.

Why do they require that?

What purpose does it serve?

What harm could possibly come from not continuously weighing an item after you have already weighed all items that need weighing on the other scale? Someone walked out of the store with the item, _after purchasing it? The RFID trips the alarms until the whole transaction is completed!
