That would've been a good reason too, but Candy's not exactly the front line soldier type. Plus I think SJWs would lose their mind if someone wrote a story where a military soldier became a daring thief to fight the establishment.

Usually in this kind of setting, people have mechanical limbs and such because they lost limbs in a war. That's normally the implication, anyway. There are allusions to it. "I lost my legs in a glider accident." "Over LENINGRAD!"

I mean the diabetes seemed to come totally out of left field. I thought it was just empathy farming, but Candy had to lose her foreleg somehow! I'd have accepted "I just chopped it off because that's what all the cool kids are doing," but this makes getting these cybernetics a much more serious affair.

this whole thing should have just been its own story disconnected entirely from what its actually set in

maybe it wouldn't be so all over the place

Oh… okay, good point they did need to give a reason why Candy is augmented. Diabetes is actually known for causing amputation, when the heart isn't strong enough to pump sugary, thick blood through the extremities. Your arms are usually not at risk, but well… ponies walk on all fours, and gravity is the deciding factor in stopping the blood flow.
