GIFs have two modes: combine and replace. Combine sometimes lets you make smaller GIFs, since it doesn't erase the previous frame, so if the next one is only different in a tiny area, the next frame can be that tiny. That breaks transparency though, because GIF doesn't let a transparent pixel overwrite a non-transparent one, so you can only replace pixels in previous frames with a solid color, not a transparent one.

The recommendation is to force all transparency to go away and make it a white background or something, so you can always replace stuff with solid pixels. Or to leave it as a "replace" GIF and maybe it might be larger.

I thought they just set it incorrectly, but they actually do try to recalculate the diffs between frames. It can't happen though because GIF sucks.

Ponerpics is just weird with resizing gifs. It's fine when you click it once or twice to put it in full size. Gifs are noticeably faster in search thumbnails too.

I assume it has something to do with transparent backgrounds, it doesn't always happen, @Lotus might know why.
