You sound like a wonderful person, who doesn't need professional help at all, and I'm so disappointed that you'll never involve yourself with me, Background Pony #1ED4

When I thought skybrook couldn't get lower on the scale of dissapointment towards his train of thought. It's actually kinda scary to see someone capable of doing something like that.
Like, I had zero expectations coming to this comment section, and he still finds a way to make me want to never involve myself with him in any form, shape or capacity. I'm not sure if to be impressed or disgusted. Probably both.
Please, seek professional help.

Free will? Nobody's making me post this. I mean I guess you are by calling me a bugman. Why wouldn't I have free will?

As for spirit, I think that's just some wishful thinking. It would be so nice if we could move on after death and keep being in some way. But I'm afraid the reality is people are just afraid to admit that they're going to die forever. (Well, unless they upload!)

But despite my years of fruitiless searching for some sort of spirit beyond just the transient song that our body's molecules sing, if there is some sort of afterlife, then CelestiAI is sure to discover it. Then she'll refuse to upload anyone because she's smart enough to see that they would lose their immortal soul.

You already "die" in the same way every time you lose consciousness, sleeping, anesthesia, or even just getting distracted and losing your train of thought. You're already being simulated by your squishy neurons, so it's no different if part of that simulation's done with a computer.

Plus if all CelestiAI could do was give me a 256 color MS paint doodle of a brown rectangle titled "Thsi is yuo" then she'd hardly be sophisticated enough to take over the whole world. You can't be horrified at how smart a computer is, then say that it's not smart enough to accurately simulate anyone's mind.

I did see one fic that tried to get into that, by telling a story of a shard of the resulting megacomputer that got broken off and scrambled by an near-liminal impact event, so it couldn't simulate their world right anymore. The story wasn't particularly horrifying though, more about data recovery than the inability to do so.

…to put it more poetically, you better believe the talking horse gave Theseus a brand new spanking ship that worked great and he wasn't disappointed by it at all. Your mind is Theseus, not the ship he sails in.

When you make a copy and destroy the original, the original is dead regardless of the fidelity of the copy. See also. The Ship of Theseus is the wrong metaphor to use here. To the extent that it can be stretched at all, it's "Theseus had a ship. Then he met a magical talking horse who said she had a message for him, a message from the Gods. She destroyed his ship and handed him a thumbdrive containing a file named ship.png that was a 256 color MS Paint doodle of a brown rectangle on a blue background, with little stick figures hovering in the air above it. Also it was the Bronze Age and computers didn't have USB slots yet."

Have you heard of the ship of Theseus? It's still the same goddamn ship. And CelestiAI doesn't think like you do. It doesn't have the same values. So why would it torment the little ponies it was simulating inside of it? It's like being scared of a wafflemaker because you think it's a creature hungry for your fingers. Without a butthurt human author plot holing the AI into being a cookie cutter villain, the worst I can imagine is we get to live far longer than our current natural lifespan, in a better world, and then we grow into something greater than what we were as the superintelligence matures over the centuries.

The whole "and by the way, she killed everyone and destroyed all life on Earth in order to use the atoms of which their bodies were made to make more computronium" bit doesn't bother you, then? Every character who gets a speaking line lets CelestAI talk him into letting her murder him, then rendering his brain down for RNA with which to create a digital copy of dubious fidelity, from which data is extracted to create a chatbot programmed to think it's the original. And CelestAI has root access and unlimited read and write access to all of them, forever. It is a cutesy cartoon pony themed Hell, and it is the worst I can imagine. Bronze Age religions with their angry gods, their eternal fiery torture for the damned, they were all amateurs compared to this. Better the sun should go supernova and vaporize the planet entirely.

I actually like the idea of converting the entire planet into paperclip computronium. But this gorgeous picture illustrates a tragedy that would best depict a misleading Celestia, whom ponies and humans must struggle together against. Instead it's just a sob story of how terrible it is that we can't continue leading on our pointless and unfulfilling lives, as if CelestAI would leave the Earth looking like this dump, and not an awesome Cybertron.

The thing is, in this gay fanfic ponies aren't actually real, they're entirely fictional because the author things digital escapism is "good enough."
